why would you change a mascot that's been used for over 15 years, and is invariably associated with the OS (hudda hudda kernel) itself?

I mean, Apple might not use the Rainbow Apple logo anymore, but they still have an apple..

Tux must stay. Everytime I am called to do some computer magic (bluescreens, random crashes, whatever), I miraculously solve the problem, but only when I have my stuffed tux with me.

If he is not there, the data is probably lost.

Tux is already established as the Linux mascot, why should he be replaced?

You're not thinking open source. There's no need to get rid of Tux; you could start your own mascot or fork Tux.

I've never used a wallpaper with any logo in it. What does that have to do with Tux?

I'd say Tux is pretty much one of the best logos/mascots around and it's also extremely well recognized, considering how many people actually have heard of Linux at all.

Besides, hardly any /larger) distruibution actually uses Tux in their logo, it's the logo for the kernel, nothing forces people to use it for distribution branding... So let kernel developers use the logo they want, it has very little to do with what yous ee on your desktop anyway.

...and if anybody, ever, replaces Tux with some boring official-looking generic logo I'm going to hate everybody involved, forever. I'll train a bunch of penguins to attack anybody using the new logo. :twisted:

Agreed. The BSD daemon is cool as well.

But Tux is definitely better than the warped window logo Microsoft uses (although I must say it's somewhat appropriate.. ;)). I don't know if they even have a mascot, Bob or Clippy perhaps. Or Ballmer... :D

If you can see the world through the Windows logo, I want some of what you've been smoking.

Windows -> window
Apple -> apple

Linux -> penguin.
Different? Yes, but not necessarily bad. I think it's a bit quirky and cute. Which is what a logo should be. If we were to stick to the mainstream convention of logo = physical manifestation of name, Linux's logo would be, what, Linus Torvalds? I think I'd rather Tux.

But.. the bird is the word! Leave him alone!

Coca-cola has had strongly-branded christmas campaigns that helped popularize the red-suited santa with a very recognizable version. So much so that it is commonly believed that Coca-cola invented the "modern" red-suited santa (which is not actually true. They may have helped popularize him, but he had appeared in red before).

In retrospect the comparison falls flat the more you think about it. Nevermind.
