View Full Version : Stuck in GRUB rescue, cannot boot live disk

February 21st, 2010, 04:57 AM
I accidently deleted my ubuntu partition, and when boot I get this message:

GRUB loading.
error:unknown filesystem
grub rescue>

I can't get into my bios options either... I just see the MSI splash screen and it cuts right to this error message.

How do I boot my live disk from grub rescue and fix this issue?

Get Testdisk (http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk_Download). It can restore partitions.

Yes, TestDisk will work and is very useful. I see you cannot get into your BIOS, which means no Windows Reinstallation DVD, or mac or whatever. You can try pressing F12 quickly and perhaps it may get you there. If it really doesn't work, either of the options I have above, try contacting your manufacturer or Ubuntu via phone for assist.

Hope this works and I hope your computer's safe!:D

am having the same problem. Which testdisk do I download? I am running Ubuntu 9.10. The options are as follows from the testdisk site:

Linux, kernel 2.6.x i386/x86_64
Linux, kernel 2.4.x i386/x86_64
Linux i386 RPM
Linux SRPM

Those are the 4 choices I have to choose from. Thanks for your help.
