View Full Version : [SOLVED] I want to build a Ubuntu NAS is it possible

Hi my name is Tony and I am starting to see the potential to using Ubuntu for allot of my dream projects. I have grown sick of Windows and have finaly started to make the switch. I started using Ubuntu 9.10 about a month and a half ago and have fallen in love with it. I here 10.04 is going to be better so I am waiting to see. My question is this I want to build a NAS using Ubuntu as the OS can it be done and I have the following computer parts at my disposal.

Thanks for your help, I had been doing yahoo searches and finding nothing and then I typed Building a Nas in the search field here and didn't find a link. So thank you for your help.

Honestly... that DIY NAS site is pretty lame. 99% of the content is linked in from other (active) sites, and even then it looks like it was effectively put out to pasture a couple years ago.

I would suggest searching for 'DIY NAS' on this forum here... you should get some decent results. Also, one of the sites that is worth looking at is smallnetbuilder.com. Lots of reviews of NAS units of various sizes... from home, SOHO, & serious business ones to DIY build-it-yerself ones. It reviews a few options like FreeNAS, Ubuntu, etc.
