How Do I Set Proper Screen Resolution?

Hello,

Even I have faced the same problem . It been a month I installed a Dual Boot with Win XP & Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala.

Its all worked fine but when I tried to set the screen resolution through

System>Preferences>Display tells me my Monitor is "unknown".

When I click "detect monitors" it does nothing.

The screen resolution is set incorrectly at 800X600, which makes page's sides beyond the edges of the screen. It shows 600x400 & 800X600 and 800x600 is the top setting on the drop down menu provided. Those, of course are 4 to 3 ratios.

My monitor is LG 700E 17" CRT & When I checked my computer's Display Adapter , I found it as Intel 82945G Xpress Chipset Family with a maximum resolution of 1280x1024.

How can I install a suitable display driver for this? How do I set my screen resolution to my desire i.e., more than 800x600?

Would someone please help me for it?

Thank you

Referencing my post from a few days ago regarding my loss of driver/hardware recognition with a Radeon X850 XT (R480) after upgrading to Ubuntu 9.10. Since upgrading to 10.04 helped me out with a very similar problem. There's very little risk in upgrading to a RC distribution, in my opinion. Open a root console, type "update-manager -d", and upgrade away. If anyone more experienced feels the need to recommend against this as a solution, I'd like to hear why. I do love to learn. lol.

Good luck with it. ;)
