The Ubuntu installer hangs on step 3 0f 6, the stage in which you select the keyboard layout. The computer it is being installed on is a Toshiba Satellite. The disk had previously worked to install on a macbook for dualbooting.

When you boot to the live cd, check it for errors.

The disk integrity check said there were no errors.

I have the exact same problem on an old Dell Optiplex gx280 trying to install over Windows XP. I tried uninstalling the antivirus software under Windows to see if somehow that was blocking Ubuntu, but no luck. It just keeps hanging up at step 3 as it does for the original poster. Disk check says all is fine.

I should add that I've installed Ubuntu on several computers going back to 6.04, but this one has me stumped.

Try using the alternate installer instead of the desktop installer.

Trying to install on an old compaq 1.2 ghz athlon, 512 mb ram, 40 gig hd. After you tell it to install, you can't see anything else. Mint will get to 40 to 70% then crash, and crash, and crash. Not as easy to install as it is cracked up to be.

Every installation I have had installing Ubuntu or Debian on old machines has been failing RAM. My two cents worth.
