Help with Installing to New HD

When I bought my Dell Inspirion several years ago I also purchased a spare hard drive,
25gb. It's never been installed, could you advise as to how to install Ubuntu 9.10 on it?
I'm smart enough to make the physical hd change, but know very little about software.
Would it be wise to install XP as well, or just have a clean Ubuntu Linux computer?

1) You have a laptop then? If so, you have to get a case, (if there is one), for your spare hard drive and use it as an external drive.

2) Just stick Ubuntu Linux on it by itself.
