Does anyone know of an Ubuntu equivalent to Browser Chooser (http://browserchooser.codeplex.com/) (Win) or Choosy (http://www.choosyosx.com/) (Mac)?

Project Description
Browser Chooser is a small tool acting as the default browser allowing you to choose what browser to open the link in. It gives you the flexibility to choose what browser to use for any given task. It is developed in VB.Net and geared towards Windows Vista and Windows 7.

I don't see how useful is that; apart from web developing.

Exactly. Completely useless for most people.

On the other hand, it would probably take a programmer just a few minutes to program something like that so maybe the OP will inspire someone...

You could use the Open With (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/11097) extension for Firefox. More useful in my opinion.

That's not what the OP is looking for.

OP, if you're desperate, I could make you a script, but it'll take me a while, as I've got a few things to do first.

No its not what the OP is looking for. A bit of humour doesnt hurt though:)
If anyone really wanted a nice looking browser chooser there is already an exceptionally good tool called Gnome-Do. Its the work of seconds to place an application launcher on it and it will do a whole lot more besides. Its a whole lot better than alt F2
Add this PPA to your software sources ppa:do-core/ppa

Never mind...

You know, when the 2nd post after the OP is "nevermind", the feeling is that it is the OP himself who made a second post saying "nevermind" about his question, and then people would move on to another thread.

Well I know on opensuse when i right click a web file and choose open with it normally shows all web browsers.

I think a quick script could do the same for ubuntu.

Give me a bit and if noahall doesn't do it I will.

I appreciate the offers to write scripts, but I don't want to take up someone else's time for something I should learn to do myself. Thank you very much, though!

I can right-click on HTML files and choose my browser with Open With...; I can also open HTML files in the app of my choosing through Do. But that's no help if the URL I want to open is in some text.

I use Do quite heavily. I can use it to open any URL or HTML doc in my main browser, which is Chrome. What I would like to be able to do is choose which browser I open URLs. If I could use Do to do something like:

Open Url > Selected Text (or text input) > [choose browser]

or even:

Open with > Selected Text (or item) > [choose program]

that would be fantastic! Is that already possible, and I just haven't figured out how to do it?

I agree, maybe that guy just wanted everyone to ignore my post? ;)

It's possible. sure.

in Gnome-do, write, for example:
firefox www.google.com
or
opera www.google.com
etc.
as you use it more often, Gnome-do will learn which browsers you like for which URLs...

Thanks! I installed this and it is pretty nice. Unfortunately, I prefer Chrome as my default browser, and I rarely use Firefox. Your suggestion did start me looking for a similar plugin for Chrome. I haven't found one, but I will keep looking.

Aha, I always hit tab. I have never typed it out in one command before. I did not know about that. Thank you very much!

The only thing I could ask for in addition is to be able to do this with selected text.

My thanks to everyone who posted!
