Openbox does not obey the recent changes that I have made in rc.xml. In particular, I've set Firefox to run without window decorations and added two desktops. However, I was able to set a keybind for toggle window decorations during this time. I've checked syntax, openbox --reconfigure goes through and everything. The worst thing about this is that even the desktops I had before aren't functional - I'm restricted to using a single desktop.

I was running 9.04 (crunchbang) when the issue started. At first, it was just an issue with the window decoration for Firefox, was able to set the keybind to toggle decorations so just left it at that. However after upgrading to 9.10 the desktop issue has arose.

Can you post your rc.xml? It might give us a better idea of what went wrong.

Do you use gnome-settings-daemon, or something that deals with desktop settings? If so, it will probably override the number of desktops Openbox tries to set.

To make Firefox borderless, try the following:


<application class="Firefox*">
<decor>no</decor>
</application>

Firefox is notoriously difficult, and for whatever reason does not follow the normal xprop values.

That helped for forcing Firefox decor-less, thanks!

The primary problem is still that virtual desktops are broken. The <desktops> section is still the same as above, but I still can't use virtual desktops! I checked the syntax with example files and I don't see anything wrong. Is there any thing else that could be causing the issue?

Also I don't use gnome-settings-daemon.

Can you post the contents of your ~/.xsession-errors file?

aha! gdm was overriding my openbox desktop configuration and defaulting it to 1 desktop. Ended up just getting rid of gdm because it's unnecessary. Thanks for your help, urukrama.

My system did not have a xinitrc, so I had to create one to tell it to start Openbox. Is that normal for Ubuntu? Where are all of the X configuration options located?
