View Full Version : What continent are you from?

Also comment if you like to say your country. 'From' can mean your place of birth or current country of residence. That decision is yours. You may pick more than one to suit your own situation.

This should be a multiple choice poll.
I am from Italy, I have been born there, but I also have an Argentinian citizenship.
Why can't I choose both?

I can not include every country in the world.
Select Europe and South America.

Where I live is probably not big enough to count as a continent.
City: Porirua (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Porirua)
Country: New Zealand (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Zealand)
Nearest continent: Australia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australia)
General geographic region: There are a number of names, including Australasia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australasia) and Oceania (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oceania).
Heritage: British and Dutch, married to a locally-born Samoan with Maori cousins. (Does that give away too many clues to my identity? Too late: astute viewers will probably recognize at least one of the people in the photos attached to my profile, one of whom was on the news last night)
EDIT: some Scottish, and there's a family connection with Dunedin and Gore.

I'd say your from Oceania. But that's my opinion.

I did wonder just how the Pacific Islanders get treated continent-wise -
as a sibling moved to New Zealand (maybe a Ubuntu user) and I lived 15 years in Hawai'i
Oceania does seem to include Australia, New Zealand, and islands like Guam, Fiji and French Polynesia/Tahiti . . .
and imho, should include the Hawai'ian Islands as well.
only as a suggestion . . . but OP may want to change poll listing from Australia to "Oceania" ?

As above . With a few exceptions I am of Danish / Scottish descent . 1st generation NZ. Porirua is not my home town (phew) .
I regard New Zealand as uniquely New Zealand, we do not have to be part of something bigger.

Live in Dunedin, NZ. Find it interesting how many people are here from NZ given our small population (about 4 million) compared with other countries - particularly when I know only one person who uses linux, and he's an IT guy into Fedora.

We don't all have convicts for ancestors you know....:p
Mine were Irish, English, Scottish and Dutch emigrants. Mostly around the middle of the Nineteenth century, but one Grandmother was born in Birmingham.
There are also any number of people with a Mediterranean heritage, as well as various Asian countries and most of the rest of the world as well. That is what makes it such a cosmopolitan country these days. ;)

It's only that in that list it looks more like the New Zealanders (and any Samoans, etc.)
would just have to opt for the Other category . . .
Although any linux users on the International Space Station would also qualify I guess . . .

The Netherlands can be referred to as Holland, it often is by the Dutch themself and also by people abroad, eventhough it is a specific region of the country. I'm from Holland/Amsterdam, I speak a Hollandic dialect (Amsterdams (http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amsterdams_%28dialect%29)) and so I'm from Holland whichever way you take it.
Still.. I don't see myself as 'Hollandic' but as Dutch, as all people from Holland.

i thought it is already clear after lisati's contribution (http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=8842070&postcount=5) that "Australia" here is meant to be Oceania.
but you are right, many islands, specially in the pacific, can't be classified by continents.
actually i was just envious because voters from my beloved continent, supposedly the origin of human species, were less than those from the most southern neighbor, or from voters from oceans isles plus those from outside our pretty planet :)

Apparently NOT for New Zealanders . . . who seem to be the real make up for the OP's "Other" category
rather than including themselves with Australia.

So Europe and North America with the most linux/ubuntu users . . . sounds about right -
although obviously biased toward English-speaking users on this forum.

So according to the inquiry (if it could be representative is another matter of course), the majority of Ubuntu users are from Europe and North America. I recently read an article about the market share of the desktop operating systems, where for the Linux-like OSes, some 1%, 2%, 3% (or even 4% are mentioned, depending on the article) market share was mentioned. I'm wandering if there's an official study which shows how the Ubuntu/Linux users are distributed around the globe... Just a thought, maybe a bit out of the topic...
Cheers,
Boyan
