I have upgraded from 6.04 CD through each release to finally install 9.10, each time the install has failed. The latest install of 9.10 got all the way to re-boot! it attempted a re-boot, displayed black and white Ununtu logo and froze! This is the fourth (4) try... it takes hours to get each release installed one after another just to see it fail.

Does 9.10 work as an upgrade or do I need to purchase a CD?

Thanks

The upgrade should work. But I also upgraded every 6 months for the last 3 years and had at least minor issues with every upgrade. This time I reorganized my computer and created a new partition for the install and did a clean install without any issues at all.

You do not have to purchase Ubuntu, just download the version you want. There are 32 & 64 bit graphical desktop installs, command line, server and several others - netbook etc.

Click on alternatives to see the other choices than the 32 bit default download.
