Is there any way that, by default, i could have my computer auto load 7, then when i want to load ubuntu, i would, for example hold the ctrl key on startup, and could select my os of choice?

Yes, you can select in grub which OS will be default and unless you press a key in a number of seconds, it will boot it. If you want to change another OS from the list, select it and hit Enter.

what version grub are you using? Are you using the default in 9.10 (grub2) or are you using grub-legacy?

For grub2

If using grub-legacy .... just install startupmanager (using synaptic) and set defaults there. I don't know if SUM works now with grub2.

+1 for startupmanager

I use startupmanager (Go: Application>Software Center... then search and install it).

It offers other cool functions related to booting beside selecting the default OS too boot.
