I have seen this on a few desktops and would like to know how to go about doing it.

Preferrably I want a program which I can open up that will display general system information such as IP, CPU Speed ( Dual Core compatable ), System Temperature, RAM usage, swapspace usage (not needed but would be nice).

I want it to blend into the desktop itself, fully transparent except for the actual text.

Anyone know how this can be done, running ubuntu 9.10 with gnome gui.

I think what you're looking for is probably Conky! (See the blog in my sig :))

There's a really great Conky thread on these forums...Head over there (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=281865) to see what people are doing with it. There are about a million pages, but you can just skip to the end for the good stuff :) For a good beginners' guide, go check out Conky Hardcore! (http://conky.linux-hardcore.com)
