KDE 4.4 has a new widget, called Web Slice, that allows you to put slices of web content on your desktop. The idea of this thread is to share web slices configuration.

To get an element from a page, use the Web Developer (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/60) extension for Firefox. When visiting the page you want to extract the content, click "Information >> Display ID & Class Details" on the Web Developer toolbar.

Here is an example for the Ubuntu countdown.

Configuration:

URL: http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/countdown

Element to Show: #countdownimage

Result:

http://ubuntuforums.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=147100&stc=1&d=1266233314

Please share yours.

Are these similar to the IE8 features with the same name?

I have no idea. I haven't used IE for a long time.

URL: http://xkcd.com/

Element to show: #middleContent

Result:

Note: if the content bleeds from the widget border, then click the widgets settings again and just click OK. Sometimes when it refreshes the content adjust itself.

You that there's a comic widget, that does the same thing?
It even gives you the chance to see comic in actual size with handy magnifying glass button.
Or myabe you don't like if for some strange reason?

In fact, I don't use the comic widget or the web slice for comics. I'm just posting examples that I think other users will like.

This was my first question. I saw "Web Slices" and went "what? That's an IE product, lol"

I don't use them in IE8, and I don't use KDE, so I have nothing to share :O I just think the name coincidence is funny.

That is awesome! I would love to have that in Gnome.

EDIT: Oh wait, that wouldn't at all work for what I would want it to do. I take back my previous statement regarding its awesomeness.

What do you want it to do? :)

I'm very active as a moderator over at another forum. Whenever someone replies to one of my posts, I get a private message, or a post is reported, an icon along with the number of posts/reports that need my attention, pops up in the notification area you can see in my screenshot.

Normally that would be ideal for this kind of thing, as it would allow me to keep track of the notification area without having to be constantly active on the site. However, in order to see it, I first need to log in - something I guess I can't do with web slices.

I have turned to this to display my google calender on my desktop. This is the only method I have found after much search and I am still having trouble formatting the sizing to include everything . Does the sizing options make any difference? what element should I choose to get the whole page to display?

Old thread, I know, but you can use Google to fetch stock market data for the DOW, NASDAQ and S&P.

This is nice because the stock ticker apps no longer are able to fetch the Dow Jones Industrial Average. Apparently, they all use Yahoo! Finance to download ticker data and, for licensing reasons, Yahoo no longer allows for data downloads of the DOW's ticker, thus the widgets can't load the DOW's ticker (http://developer.yahoo.com/forum/General-Discussion-at-YDN/Dow-Jones-Average-Error/1283975525000-e462d312-827e-3316-900e-c85f668f587d). Obviously, the DOW is perhaps the most watched of the indexes so this is a big issue.
