transparent gnome-panel??

hello.. i've been trying to get rid of the above panel and try dockbarx...
i have been tweaking around with different themes to work with dockbarx..
i changed the transparency of gnome panel..to almost perfectly transparent..
i have been stuck on a stupid theme "Dark Room" just to make gnome panel transparent, but i am stuck on this. Some icons on system tray have a background. look in the pic for example

thats vlc.
if you want to remove its icon from the tray, go to vlc then click on tools-preferences. then uncheck systray icon.
that might be easier than removing the grey border
