Hi all,

can anyone please help me... I just finished installing ubuntu and all the software I wanted on a really slow connection and I'd hate to re-do the whole thing :(

I have a toshiba a300 laptop with an ati hd3400 graphics card. I wanted to enable the desktop effects and ubuntu asked me to enable the proprietary ati driver for me and I said yes. It asked me to restart and then boom! :(
The system now goes into a black screen after the gdm is started and the caps lock light is blinking.

How can I disable the desktop effects and the proprietary driver without going into gnome? I tried booting into the failsafe mode at the grub menu but didn't find anything.

any help is greatly appreciated..
