I'm running ubuntu studio 9.1 (64 bit) and have openoffice 3.1 installed. I sometimes use Spanish in writing/encoding but I still haven't discovered what are the shortcuts for special characters like ,,,,,, etc.

I mean, I can open the menu on special characters, choose and insert and I also see there the numeric equivalent but frankly, I find it tedious to do this insertion especially since there are so many of these characters in Spanish; and I can't make these number combinations work. Is there a way to more easily type it like one does in ms office?

See that one perhaps: Special Western Characters (http://user.services.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=22673).
