Whenever I try to upgrade my Ubuntu 9.10 with security updates (a number of which seem to be important package) I can getting the error:

Changes applied
Not all changes and updates succeeded. For further details of the failure, please expand the 'Details' panel below.

DETAILS:

Extracting templates from packages: 100%
Preconfiguring packages ...
(Reading database --- 35%dpkg: unrecoverable fatal error, aborting:
files list file for package 'libcdio-cdda0' is missing final newline
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (2)
A package failed to install. Trying to recover:

Then it does nothing.

What can I do? I've been troubleshooting this strange error without any luck, but it has me unable to install any of the Updates to 9.10 to firefox, or even to install new packages at all!
