Anyone get hit with the latest Windows XP update that causes the Blue Screen Of Death ?
I've not turned my XP machine on in days so I may be in the clear. Can't remember if I got an update last week.

Neither do I. Shared home desktop uses XP and is up-to-date, and no BSOD. To tell you the truth, I have never seen a BSOD in XP.

Where do you heard that? Perhaps it is just FUD.

I've seen it from a person at work but this article should explain.

It's a legit issue that's happening with the latest round of MS updates. Although it seems to be unclear why it's hitting some users and not others at this point.

I don't fire up XP that often and hadn't noticed - the only copy I currently have is on my main desktop which is usually running Ubuntu server & hosts my website and email server.

I did run into problems with the update for SP3 on my machine a year or two back - turns out that my desktop needed a patch from Compaq/HP otherwise SP3 wouldn't play nice on that particular setup.

edit: just read the article. 17-year old bug? eeek!

It hasn't been affecting too many PC's, only certain non-standard configs.

never ever?I've seen too many. Some were due to messed up hardware, but others "just because". In fact, my current box, which has run Ubuntu without any problems for over 2 years, kept BSODing with XP (but not Win2k...hmmmm).

Sure seems like that's thee culprit, and not surprising. Looks like Microsoft needs to give everyone a stable rootkitting API so we don't have these issues in the future! (half-joking) :D

Every OS has it fair share of update breaks.
I ran into some with Ubuntu.
This the first time I heard of it happening on Windows and I used to fix computers. really odd

Talking about Microsoft products fills the gap in conversation between whether Linus use KDE or Gnome or if Arch is better than Ubuntu, or last but not least if Chuck Norris is actually Linus in disguise.

This isn't the first time this has happened, when SP3 came out, quite a few AMD powered systems had problems booting too. It would BSOD on first boot, then on second boot it would start normally. I had several customers that got all in a panic, and never tried to boot a second time.

I'm running the latest updates, and have been for 2 and a half years now with XP. No issues at all.
