If you are totally new to Ubuntu, you should visit the Absolute Beginner Talk (http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=326) section, where we will help you out.

Why not say hello to everyone? Post your introduction here!

P.S. We won't bite your heads off! ;)

Hey, I'm Izek, I mean coldReactive, I mean... Psumi.

Uh... I'm not really new to Ubuntu or linux, but I am new according to experience. been around since 7.10 or so. Man, have things changed since then.

My first linux distro was KNOPPIX.

I'll introduce myself to bring it back on topic. I came here because of some of the misinformation which has been posted (I've been here before under another alias). I've used Linux since 2001 and recently switched back to Windows because I prefer it, it's a lot better than it was when I switched away from it 8 years ago. Anyway I decided it was pointless to keep arguing with people over the sake of an OS so I now just post replies in sensible and Help threads when new users need help.

I don't particularly like Ubuntu (or many distros for that case) and usually end up reinstalling Slackware after switching and configuring another distro to my liking. I use CentOS on servers because it does what I want it to and I want to train up and go for RHCE. I did use Kubuntu for a year when 6.06 came out because I wanted to see what all the hype was about, it wasn't a bad release but I ended up erasing it because of the same annoyances which make me not like Debian.

Introduction, Done :P

I am new here, just this past week. I've been a little surprised by the amount of activity on the boards. I've been reading through the posts quite a bit and it's been helpful from a learning perspective.

Even though I just installed Ubuntu this week, I'm not completely new to Linux. I used Fedora for the last 3 years. I liked it ok, but it didn't really fit what I wanted out of an OS. Plus I was never really comfortable with being the Aplfa tester for Red Hat. Maybe if I was more into developing or looking to establish a career in Linux it may have appealed to me more. And I seemed to have a lot of trouble with the last 2 versions.

I'm a Windows guy at work, system admin, db admin, and Excel specialist, but I really don't like Windows. I think it's the concept of paying high dollars for software that's written well behind the leading edge (because anything else would lose money for MS), for apps that are normal and expected in the home evironment (internet, email, basic business tools, photos, video, etc). I think at the very least a home user should be able to have those basic functions without having to pay hundreds of dollars for software.

...and so, my Linux experiment continues.

Hi

I am KIWINZ

I have been with Ubuntu Forums since day one. I have many years IT experience as a senior IT Manager. Prior that experience in Government , Commerce and some areas I am not free to mention.

I have been active in many voluntary organizations.

I am married with three adult sons. I am differently able'd but have recently gone into remission and started a long road back to mobility. But I am a simple Kiwi with simple ambitions.

I am motivated by compassion for others and since my Medical Retirement this has been my focus. Helping others less fortunate.

Shame about your disabilities and that, but it just happens, I'm afraid. :(

But you're still young at heart, that's the important thing! :D

Hello everybody ^_^

I'm Artificial Intelligence (or just A.I.). I've been messing with Linux since year 2000. As KiwiNZ, I have been here at the ubuntuforums since day one.
I love writing guides and playing video games.

My job is nowhere near IT/tech, as I'm working in a daycare-center for kids between age 5 to 10 and sometimes as a substitue teacher in our local school.

My name is Danny from Canada. I used something with KDE at university to compile my C projects, then installed Gentoo on my own machine in 2005, then Ubuntu in 2006 before coming back to Ubuntu permanently in 2008. At that time I completely removed Windows from my desktop and when I bought my laptop in 2009 I installed only Ubuntu on that as well.

Been creeping the boards trying to keep up with the latest in technology and releases in the Linux world, as well as tune my setup for my specific needs. And helping others along the way I hope.

I have a computer science degree which makes it a bit easier to get around Linux since I can write/modify applications in most programming languages. I currently develop software for the oil and gas industry world wide and most of the big name oil companies are currently using my software for their seismic data management.

That's me!

My name is Kenny Strawn, and have been at Ubuntu Forums since June 2008, though have re-created my account since then.

I currently am 16 years old, having been born on April 14, 1993. Yes, I am a die-hard Linux user, and specifically with Ubuntu-based distros, such as Ubuntu, Mint, Kubuntu, and Crunchbang, not to mention other distros as well, such as Moblin, UNR, Google Chrome OS (as Chromium), and Linpus Lite.

I LOVE the terminal, and doing work in it, and prefer it over X to perform certain tasks, such as package management and running apps as root.

It is really excellent for the user if he is able to master the command line. It shows that the computer user is a real one.

Hi people, I'm in love with ubuntu and linux in general. I've been using linux on and off since 2001 and 100% of the time since I discovered ubuntu 7.04. I don't know much cause I use it just to use it but I'm learning, even if a bit slowly. :)

And I want to say that indeed Metal and Linux are a good match as Matt said above :D

Hi to the ones who have been around for some time and welcome to the new members!

I've been using Ubuntu since it came out and was very active on the French Ubuntu forums before I joined here. I got into the mod team in January 07 and in the admin team in April last year. I'm not from the IT field (I'm a Biologist at a French univ), and spend much of my time as a Staff member here. Whenever I can get back into helping someone, I'm very pleased, this is why I joined the forums in the first place :)

Now to introduce myself :P

I am Calvin Smith, better known as The Toxic Mite to members of the Ubuntu community. My life is still pretty boring compared to the people above me, being only 15 years old and still in school...

I am a railway enthusiast, and I aspire to become a train driver soon after I leave school. I've been trainspotting for over a year now. It's great fun :D

I have been using Ubuntu on-and-off for a total of four months now, having first converted in April last year. Unfortunately, my laptop borked in July last year, so I was stuck with a Windows-powered desktop for a while. After days of tinkering, I decided to switch back to Ubuntu, which happened in last month (:D). It sure is nice to be using Ubuntu again!

I started using Ubuntu Linux on 2 January this year. In fact, I went cold turkey from Windows because I don't know how to partition a hard drive! Since then, I've experimented with some other Linux distros (Puppy, Mint and Mandriva), but have decided to stick with Ubuntu. It's just as easy to learn how to use as Windows had been. (The only drawback is missing iTunes.)

Hello Everyone.
I've been using ubuntu since 7.04. Tried Redhat 9 and fedora core 5 before, but could not use them for one or other reason. Finally with ubuntu, I was able to switch to linux. I regularly test out new distros using LiveCDs or Virtualbox, but upto now, found noting better than ubuntu.
One of the reasons is ubuntuforums. It Rocks.

February 13th, 2010, 07:56 PM
*AA meeting* Hi, my name's Dave, and I'm a Linux addict

My name is The Real Dave, 17 and from Ireland, and I've been using Ubuntu for about a year and a half, ever since Windows XP formatted itself and my data :(

Discovering Ubuntu was a turning point for me. I always liked computers, but never really got to learn much. All that changed with Ubuntu. I was put in control, and the learning curve was steep, but greatly assisted by these forums :) I started off on 8.04 Hardy, and I can still remember the awe I felt when I first booted a LiveCD.

Because of how much I've learned, I've decided to study Computer Science :) The best thing is though, I've only scratched the surface of what there is to learn :)

I'm a blogger, and run a couple of blogs, the main one being Linux Expresso (http://linuxexpresso.wordpress.com), a technology blog, mostly about my computers and my adventures with Linux.

I'm almost always on these forums, but I can usually be found in the Cafe, ergo the low bean count ;) I'm often on the #ubuntu IRC channel too, doing my best to help with what I can.

Great thread idea BTW :D

I saw the discussion about creating this post, and I am glad it happened. It is always nice to get a few greetings from new and old members.

I am Nightwishfan, I have posted here since early 2008. I live in Pennsylvania USA, and am a member of the Ubuntu-Us-PA Loco team. I have used Ubuntu since right after the Gutsy release and Linux has been my sole operating system since then. I also like and use the Gnome desktop. My favourite bands are Nightwish and the music of Hans Zimmer and Joe Hisaishi.

I like to post in responses that get few replys even if I can only lead the members in a new direction, as that is much better than no help at all. I also try to make members feel welcome when in a new forum, as it can be hard to ask the right questions when you are new. I hope everyone can feel comfortable using Ubuntu and these forums.

Glad to meet all of you.

I was born in the early 80's in the United States. I am Caucasian. I speak English, French, Japanese, and a small bit of German.

I have been using linux for 9 years. I dabbled with it before that, I had my neighbor install gentoo for me with enlightenment 16. I didn't even know what I was doing and in about 2 weeks I went back to windows.

I then decided to try Linux again, so I installed Mandrake, and used that for a long time until early 2005 when I heard about a new operating system called ubuntu. So I installed ubuntu.

Eventually a cool os called Elive came out I had version 0.1.0 ^^

Finally I arrived upon OpenBSD which I have loved untill this year, I switched back to gentoo, the system that I started on.

Gentoo is Far superior to anything else I used.

I'm Mark, born in Sydney/Australia 1968, living in The Netherlands since 1971 and in Amsterdam since 1982. I have a beautiful wife and 2 wonderful kids.
I enjoy listening to alternative/indie/progressive/experimental/psychedelic Rock!

I worked as a Delphi Database-developer for quit some time but a burnout forced me to quit my job and eventually IT all together..
Now I'm working at Dutch-Mail (TNT) and operate mail sorting-machines and do some other stuff. I'm very unhappy with my current job but also I'm very much afraid to try something new or maybe even return to IT.

I've been playing with Linux since about 1996-1998.
Never been much of a *ubuntu-user although Kubuntu-Karmic is currently operating my desktop.
Over the years I've been mainly using Debian or Arch (still for one of my servers).. and in the past Red-hat and SUSE.

I've been a member of the forum since 2005 and enjoy helping other people with there problems.

Greetings,

I'm Russell; awesome, but perhaps not as awesome as RiceMonster. I'm 28 and currently live in Portsmouth, my other half and I are planning to move to Sweden after we get married this year.

I've been dabbling with computers for about 16 years, professionally for 10 years and Linux for three years. Outside of work I tend to watch anime, play pool or computer games, read, or get roped into the cooking. I used to be into sports bikes, but am currently without one.

At night I fight crime, like Batman.

Hey, I'm JDShu, and like many obnoxious people you have probably met, I love to talk about myself.

I got into Linux in the last two years of high school, where a friend gave me Knoppix to try, then Fedora Core. I then got into Gentoo (all the time I wasted might have affected my grades). Finally in college I thought this is more trouble than it is worth, and installed Ubuntu.

I recently graduated college, working at an internship, and trying to get a real job. Computer Science and Economics are my too favorite subjects and I like to discuss both topics, ideally at the same time :D Currently I am reading famous economics books and writing a game.

I have lived almost exactly half my life in HK and half my life in various parts of the United States. Including the midwest in the middle of nowhere, the deep south, and the new england area. I speak Cantonese and English, have passable Japanese (though its deteriorating) and Mandarin, and I learned French for 9 years and still can't speak it. I tend to sink all my spare time into Manga and watching Starcraft :(

Told you I like to talk about myself!

Hello,

I am Silver Fox. I have been around for a couple of years now on these forums, though I was lurking as an unregistered member for sometime before hand ;)

Ubuntu was first introduced to me by a colleague and since then it has become my operating system of choice. From tentative steps I feel that I am now quite confident with it. At home I run two machines running various versions of Ubuntu. At the moment I am running Ubuntu 9.04 on a desktop computer and Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10 on my Acer Aspire One. I am also testing Lucid Lynx 10.04 Alpha 2 on a spare laptop which has a dual boot with #! Crunchbang Linux 9.04

Socially I try to stay fit and active. My fitness regime includes Running, Cycling, Swimming and Badminton. I am also a keen snooker and pool player. Playing Snooker and Pool for the local pub team is my way of relaxing whilst at the same time socializing with friends. I am not really a film buff, but can appreciate good cinema. I do however like music, especially from the 60's era.

I'm an IT professional working in the United Kingdom. I have been working as web developer and database administrator in a very small development team. We typically follow a DSDM methodology in our development projects as we have multiple skills at our disposal.

At work we also make use of Ubuntu (and just recently Fedora 12) for our projects. We have two machines with WUBI 9.04 installs on them and also a machine dual booting Ubuntu 8.04 with Windows XP. I think I am very fortunate to be exposed to these different versions of Ubuntu in that my knowledge and experience can only be enhanced. This knowledge I use when trying to help others.

My involvement with Ubuntu and its community is probably better explained here (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Silver_Fox).

Hey Everyone! I'm Joe. I like telescopes, musical instruments, anything with an engine and computers. My first experience with computers was with a Timex (ZX80 or 81 I think) then moved through my Commodore (Vic 20, 64, Amiga) phase, my PC (DOS, Windows) phase and now Ubuntu. I've tried a few things in Linux but only the past 6 month have I been serious. Windows free (sort of) now. It's quite the learning experience but this is the place to be I guess. Hope I get to know a few of the folks 'round here.

I am not really new here, or to Linux for that matter. I have beer a member of the forum for a little over 2 years, and I have been using ubuntu for about the same amount of time (off and on). The things that keep brining me back to ubuntu is the awesome support that I get while coming to the forums, the fact that ubuntu is one of the better OS's that I have used.

Hello,

I actually registered a while ago but kind of forgot about that until recently when I was looking for help with something. I've been using Kubuntu for a while now. I know nothing about computers though. I'm a law student, computer science isn't exactly a major part of the course. I picked up a bit of bash to allow me to get around my OS more easily, and am trying to pick up a bit of python at the mo, in my spare time. Just for the fun of it really.

Happy to be here.

EDIT: apologies for the bad acronym.

Hello!!

I already posted a couple of times today and got a lot of help from the members, glad I found this place to introduce myself and say thanks to the community!

I am relatively new to Linux and completely new to Ubuntu - being a girl, I didn't get much encouragement to enter the world of technology - felt too shy to try it - but now I decided to get over it and step up to this challenge and from what I could see, this community is just the right place to start - lots of friendly people, who already helped me so much, even when I was frustrated.

I hope one day I might be the one helping the future newbies.

All the best!

Hi I'm Bill - found Linux by frantically searching for a way to recover my photos from a crashed XP machine(I was successful using Slax). Searched the net and discovered the Ubuntu Forums from the office and really enjoyed the tone and the offered help. I'm not in the IT or computer business (Sr. Project Manager in the construction industry) and use Windows machines exclusively at the office, so my knowledge of Linux is very limited. However I liked what I read and about 6 weeks ago I took the plunge and run Ubuntu Karmic exclusively on my home desktop - so I guess you can say the the forums are the reason for the switch and have been a great help, you should all be applauded for that - my son is amazed by the 3d cube and graphics (dads not such an old fart after all) Thanks again for all the help - I'm glad to be here - looks like I've found a new home.

I got the pick from the 57th Med Website. The unit disbanded about a year after I got out. Part of Bush's reassignment program to move and rename units. I was a 19K for a few years, then retreaded to 67T for a few more years.

Hello, I joined the forums mainly because I'm still trying to gather more information about Linux before I put it on my laptop. I'm really impressed by what I've seen and read so far I have to say. It will be my first time using Linux. My big question right now is are there any special requirements that I need on my laptop in order to put Linux on it? I'm really excited to be expanding my computer skills by being here, and I can't wait to actually get Ubuntu on my laptop but I just want to make sure I can put it on my laptop. It's great to be part of the community :) Nice to meet all of you.

Hi to All,
I've been running Suse for a year or so on my desktop and netbook and decided to try Ubuntu 64bit on my desktop PC.

In summary:
Pros

Painless installation, sound, video, lan, drives all worked first time
Fast PC boot ~45 secs
Slick desktop layout/function, very different from Gnome Suse. Suse default tries to look a bit like MS Win whereas Ubunto seems to have broken the shackles
Massive amounts of software applications appear to be readily available
Easily set up my Analogue and DVB tuners
Crossover works well allowing IE6 with Active X to run smoothly in Linux

Cons

None-yet, although I might need to ditch Suse off the Netbook in favour of Ubuntu !!

Hello everybody.
My name is Laxman and I am from Nepal though I study in India. I accidentally came across linux through a link while I was searching for free softwares for Windows:-k. And the link was for Ubuntu.

I was very surprised as to "How come an operating system be free?" I really like the idea and understood what FOSS is all about.

After using linux for awhile, I realised that even after using Windows for 50 years one can safely remain unaware as to if there is any such thing as an operating system.

I know many such people who do not even know what an operating system is.

I have been into this community for around 15 days or so and already got great support.

Hello everybody again.):P

I've only recently made it my primary OS due to some wireless issues which I have now determined were self generated problems. I dual boot with Windows 7 so I can use iTunes, but other than that I prefer using Linux. It just works... for me anyway

Hello I'm BO3B everywhere on the internet, B06B if that name's taken for some reason.

I've had a short past of trying to become a permanent Linux user. I tried Fedora 7(I think) about 3 years ago and got pissed off about compatibility(used to be a huge windows noob), then Ubuntu 9.04(again, I'm not sure) about half a year to a year ago. Just 2 days ago, I figured that I was experienced enough with computers to tackle this again and now I'm using Kubuntu 9.10 dual-booted with Vista, for playing games.

I'm much much more experienced with making Windows bend to my will, but since I want to be a programmer later on, I figured the world of open-source would be the best place to start.

Hi! I'm Pete and I've been using computers since I was 13 years old (I'm 36 now). I discovered Ubuntu a few days ago after my laptop kept showing a BSOD under XP and I couldn't fix it. Nor was I able to run the restore disk because the disk was damaged (not sure how that happened).

So, I ended up doing a search for Linux and found the Ubuntu Live Disk. Tried it out in my laptop before I installed, liked it and it's now my preferred OS. I liked is so much I even set it up on a dual boot with windows XP on my desktop PC. :)

Hello world :D
I'm Pauligrinder. I've been registered to ubuntuforums since 2008, but realised just now that I never introduced myself.
I used Linux for the first time during autumn 2008, Fedora Core something at school. When I got home that day, I googled, and found out about Xubuntu, which I installed over my Windows Vista installation straight away. And I haven't looked back since :)
Through Xubuntu 8.04 I started learning how Linux works, and after half a year of usage, my friends started calling me a Linux guru :D Simply because I never gave up and just kept learning everything. I now consider myself better at Linux than Windows, despite using Windows 10x more than Linux. I have also made my parents use Xubuntu, and they're happier with it than they ever were with XP (I made some bash-scripts for automation and configured everything for them, of course). Our home now has 2 desktops, 2 laptops running Xubuntu, and a server running Ubuntu Server (which I manage through SSH, without GUI etc :)).

However when I looked at my system resources & saw I was only using 15.6%, compared to WinXP-SP3 were I had 15% remaining resources any given time, I felt like I had the newest fastest gaming pc on the market! :D

I've been using Linux completely since september, but first touched it about a year before that.
It seems the best way for me to learn is to find out how to help others w/ problems. Often I start knowing little more than they do but with a rapid learning rate and a high success rate, I learn and others benefit. I'm not very skilled in social interactions due to responsibilities and being homeschooled, but I hope to overcome this with communicating via the forums [unless I get banned first]. I was previously known as some-what-Gnu-2-networks but dropped that user name to my current, better sounding one.

What it is everyone? ):P Name is Brian, been using Linux/Ubuntu for about 4 months now and have been completely Windows free (after 16 years) since the second week. I instanly fell in love with Ubuntu after trying it via VMware on my laptop for about a week. I had tried some other distro's (Fedora, openSuSE, Mandriva & Debian) as well but none grabbed me quite as much as Ubuntu did. I had been interested in & reading about Linux OS's for quite a while, but never took the plunge until I setup this desktop. The Ubuntu community is amazing and the support on the forums is outstanding. The only real issue I have had with karmic ootb was I had to fix the blank desktop issue with the radeon 9200 pro, and with one search in the forum I found a solution right away. Within a few minutes was running smooth and have been ever since......but enough of me rambling on, I am proud to be using Linux & Ubuntu and join the community.

sudo apt-get install new guy

My first post was actually just now in the March screenshots thread. Shoot first, introduce yourself later, right? I've been observing since I installed in December, though.

I installed Ubuntu on my HP tx2110us tablet after my harddrive crashed and didn't want to go through the hoops of reinstalling Vista. And thus far I've had it Karmic with Gnome, tried KDE, removed KDE but screwed something up, tried XCFE, removed it and screwed something up, had to do a complete reinstall, opted for the encrypted home folder on the reinstall, decided I didn't want it, tried to revert back to an unencrypted home folder, screwed something up, went though a long and arduous process of restoring all said home files from previous installation, finally reconfigured all my looks and apps, and have finally taken a breath.

And still prefer all that to working with Vista.

Cheers, friends.

hello new guys, from a fellow new guy. lol *waves*

and hello [not so new] guys/gals. *waves*

I am rasa, a fairly 'new' ubuntu user.

a couple years back i tried gutsy gibbon, but I still had dial up, and it worked for about a week then stopped. (no idea). But i did like it while it worked.

Now I have been using 9.10!Karmic~ for about a month now..
and I have never used another system that i love as much as this!!

I think Ubuntu is absolutely amazing!
and I couldnt be happier with it . :)

When I first installed 9.10 about a month ago,
I decided to go the *careful* route and just install using wubi inside *hack*> windows.

After I used that for a few days, I decided that I was comfortable enough with it to stop using windows, so decided to partition,,,,

however, during the partition ( or right before) .. something came over me that said; " hey, what are you doing? we dont want windows anymore, remember???" lol

So I went for it, and completely removed windows for GOOD! :D lol

best PC decision i ever made!
and now I have multiple windows users inquiring about this beautiful new system they are graced with whenever they pass me machine. lol

Ive already wiped, , and installed 9.10 on 3 other computers that were infected with windows,
and each user is very happy with the new decision!
I have more people asking everyday,.....
so perhaps I can do my part to *try* and put a dent in MS afterall......... at least in my head.

This forum and its members have been beyond helpful in my journeys into the world of Ubuntu,
I give many thanks for that. Thank you everyone. ... great work, great people, great OS!

I love Ubuntu!

See you around, Rasa. <3

 Indeed.

2 of the machines I have recently installed Ubuntu 9.10 on.. ( one of them being my own)..
really did look to be heading for the dump..
no matter what was done to them, how much they were fixed, cleaned, tweaked, etc.. they would just get worse.
They would work ok again for a week or less, but then go right back to making the user want to scream. ( or worse) lol

After installing Ubuntu on them.... They literally run like brand new machines. :o

I am amazed at the difference that a REAL OS makes!
I always knew windows was awful, and that it would get worse and worse ( and it has and does)...

but i really never knew how easy it would be to completely switch to a new, windows free OS. ( guess MS spends allot of chee$e to make it that way eh?) lol

and now that I am putting it on other peoples machines..
they are loving it, and showing other people, who are now asking for it and getting used to the idea of not HAVING to be windows infected anymore. ..

man.. what a beautiful thing!! lol :KS

Ubuntu4all!

Before I typed this I thought to myself, "short, medium or long post?"

I chose medium because I thought that people who actually read the new posts in this thread might be genuinely interested in them.

And so:

I had known about Linux for several years now, and had heard many of its positive attributes. I am a mechanical engineer and unfortunately one of our stereotypes is oh so very true. "If it isn't broken, don't fix it". I had used windows since 3.1, and always told myself, "I know this kind of stinks, but there is a new OS coming out, hopefully that will fix the file allocation issues."

Yesterday morning I popped a DVD into my reader...which then failed to recognize the disk. This problem had persisted off and on for about a year, and I had always waited for it to cough and wake up, but this time I blew a fuse. I have an acquaintance that uses and works with Linux, so I made an ISO disk for Fedora. He said, "no, use Ubuntu."

I combed through my files to make sure that I had saved everything important on the external drive, burned an Ubuntu ISO, restarted the computer, and jumped off into the deep end.

During the initial installation, a brief kernel error flashed across the screen so quickly I couldn't read. I dismissed it then, but as you will see later, it was important.

Quick installation, wonderfully easy interface to figure out. Loved the lightning reboots. Broadcom BCM4311 wireless not recognized. Downloaded ndiswrapper and driver, successful installation, yet wireless now disabled. Boy was I stumped. I made the mistake of cracking open a few beers during the installation, and that slowed my brain a bit.

Following a combination of advice pieces, many of them from these forums, 3 hours later I had reinstalled the OS, loaded b43fwcutter, and made my way back here, that time from my laptop and not my wife's.

I was elated. At first I felt a bit silly, it had been years since I had extensively used a command line function, and many of my mistakes were simple typos. :o

Within 30 minutes of that, all of my videos/music/ebooks (all in a variety of formats) were fully integrated, my palm os unit had synced, and I had even found a few neat little tools.

This morning I woke up and looked at my wife's laptop sitting across the room. She caught me staring at it and said, "don't even think about it". :D

Instead, I cobbled together a PC setup comprised of 8-12 year old components (the poor PC wouldn't even POST half of the time before I moth balled it into the garage). 30 minutes after I powered the system on, my 8 and 6 year old boys were playing games on it over the internet.

I am hooked and not looking back.

Thanks for all of the great support!

Hi.

I've been using linux in and out since red hat 7.2, I believe around 2001, in Mauritius island.

Where the heck is that? (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=mauritius&sll=48.82285,2.298344&sspn=0.007813,0.01339&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Mauritius&t=h&ll=-19.973349,57.65625&spn=171.827767,360&z=1)
Ok this map won't show you mauritius until you zoom in by a lot.

Turns out it's a rather pretty island with friendly locals. It lacks something though: Internet support. Back then there was just linmodems. I've struggled a lot with my linux boxes.

I saw the light when my soon to be employer employed me in a small call centre as an IT manager. ADSL was available and linux made its way in the call centre. I got management back up because budget was small and linux free :)

Then I moved to Thailand, a vastly Microsoft friendly country, and I won't use linux for a long time. When I came back to it, it was WAY better.

I now use ubuntu on my laptop at home, my wife asked to switch to it soon after we started dating and she saw how cool my laptop was and my step daughter also made the switch (with more difficulty however. Peer pressure is a big factor for teens).

In Mauritius, my parents are still struggling with windows, viruses, I don't see them online for weeks sometime. repairs, fixes, viruses... I want to free them from that but before they need a nice hardware modem.

It's coming soon. The whole island is currently being cabled with optic fibre which means fast ADSL even in most remote places (sounds weird on an island but there's lots of isolated houses in fields). Hopefully from there Ubuntu will enter my parents house too.

I'm a FreeDOS and Ubuntu user. I don't have any Windows on my computers. Under DOS, I am a programmer since a long time ago, but under Linux I'm just starting.
Gaming, I like it, but I prefer games that are non-realistic, because realism reminds me of everyday life and it's so boring! :) So I prefer classics, which usually are DOS games and thus, I can play both under FreeDOS or Ubuntu with DOSBox.
I am also a musician and I put a lot of attention to music in games and movies. I would like to be able to compose on my computer under Ubuntu, but I'm still looking for the perfect application for that.

I like Ubuntu. There are distros that are better in some aspects, but usually, for those aspects, I prefer FreeDOS, that I have in the other partition. Ubuntu is so far the perfect complement to FreeDOS and with the two, I am very happy with my computer

Wow, a FreeDOS user! I actually have a Dell computer that came with FreeDOS on a floppy and no operating system installed on the hard drive. It is a Dimension e520n. I don't know if Dell still does this.

Hey everyone! My name is Jon and I've been leeching information from this forum without saying thank you off and on since 7.04 heh. I wish to change that now by contributing in any way that I can so others will have the same help I've had from using the forums. :D

I've been playing with computers for around 13 years and love them to death. Been dabbling in different linux distros for at least 8 years and never really got the hang of any, but have been through quite a few. Now I'm hoping to make the switch from Windows to Ubuntu and really learn how to use this distro besides just putting in commands from suggestions without knowing quite what I'm doing.

Let the long journey begin!

I'm 16, I've been running Jaunty on my laptop for about six months now, and I'm just now sorta kinda getting a little bit more acquainted with Linux, but I'm still a n00b and I know it. Thanks for reading this, and I hope to become an active member of the community.

Hey there guys and gals!

The name is Dr.Kraus and I'm a Ubuntu/Windows 7 user.
Just finished installing Ubuntu on my Toshiba Tecra Tablet laptop just now and I must say that I am very impressed opon how fast Ubuntu 9.10 runs on this! With Windows 7, the laptop was playing catch up the entire time and couldn't run as fast as Ubuntu is running right now! I'm hoping to help improve the Ubuntu experience with the rest of the community.

Thanks,

Hi everyone! I am Dominique. I am a Windows 7 user (now) whose been really interested in running Ubuntu since 2007. I have tried using Ubuntu in 2007 while working for another company, we had a great guy who is into Ubuntu, he influenced me to use it.

I hope to "dual boot" first before finally migrating to Ubuntu.

I am no programmer nor computer geek so this forum is really a big help for a newbie like me.;)

Hi all,

I'm Greg, 30 and from just north of London in UK.

Dabbled with Linux for a few years, but more recently have been dual-booting home PC with Ubuntu, and now have made a full install on my laptop.

Work as a software developer, primarily with a Microsoft background in Visual C++ and more recently C#, but have just changed jobs and now needing to pick up Java, Lotus Domino and by the sounds of it some Perl.

Wanting to start contributing to Ubuntu as well, so planning on picking up Python at the same time. Any pointers for getting started in the development area would be gratefully received.

Cheers,
Greg

Just installed Ubuntu yesterday, so overwhelmed! I'm searching the forum on how to find the applications that say they are installed and run them! Sudo isn't being too helpful at the moment so I'm hoping to find an easier way just to somehow put links to the programs on my desktop so I can run them like I did in windows. A lot of things say they are installed in the package manager but they aren't anywhere in my applications list or anywhere else!

Loving the OS, just wish that it was little more obvious when it comes to running and installing things! :P

Hello Forum,

My name is Kenny Meyer, I'm a Computer Science student currently living in Paraguay.

My main goal is being a software/web application developer, where I use Django as my preferred Python Web-Framework, being also familiar with PHP applications and RoR.

Besides I just love Programming languages and eager to study more of them; I am most familiar with Python, but started with C, which was a mistake in my eyes, because my learning experience was 10x slower than with Python at many stages. I'm also familiar with Bash, Perl, Ruby and JavaScript.

My preferred platform is generally a Linux box. In the past months I've been trying many Linux OS and in the end settled again with Ubuntu, because I love the package manager and the great software selection from Ubuntu. It should be available with every Linux OS.

Thanks to the Ubuntu developers and community I can truly say, I don't have to depend on Microsoft Windows anymore, luckily.

Talk you around! :)

Hi!

I am pretty much a linux noob... first peak at ubuntu was 8.04, although it was really buggy on my laptop at the time so I went back to windows.
I am not one of those windows haters, although I don't understand mac users//
Anyway, I just put 9.10 on my laptop and its working great, and I really enjoy it. My main desktop is windows 7 which I like as well ( I was raised on windows so its all I know lol).
I am really computer savvy when it comes to windows machines etc... but I don't know my way around ubuntu at all, which is why my main machine is still windows.
It's nice to be a part of the community! Looking forward to learn, and someday be able to contribute!

I use Linux for 2.5 years. My first expereance was ubuntu 8.04, than i changed it to Debian, my favourite linux distro, after that was Suse Linux (great one), than again Debian and now its Ubuntu, because of community, drivers for my laptop, and stable work.

I think my experience will be helpful for people, who need advise or smth like that, here.

Ha, actually laziness. My router is in a different room from my desktop, and it was easier to install Ubuntu and have the wireless card work than in Fedora. I still use Fedora at work though, but I now have 2 computers running Ubuntu. I can't say that I really have a preference yet though.

Hi all,

I've been using Ubuntu and it's variants since version 7.04 (I think!) and have watched with happiness and amazement at the rate of growth and development of Ubuntu and linux in general over the last few years.

I'm by no means a power user but I do know my way round a linux box for most of what I want to achieve.

This forum has has been a great source of information for me while I've been using Ubuntu so I decided it was time to join up and see if there's anything I can give back to the community.

Currently I have both Ubuntu and Kubuntu 9.10 installed on my machines. It's not as daft as it sounds, I used to use Kubuntu exclusively before KDE 4 was released but the instability of KDE 4 forced me to first use XFCE and then gnome. Various internet review suggested that KDE is back on the right track so I'm giving Kubuntu another chance :) Only time will tell if KDE can win me back.

So, I'll see you around the forum!

Really I just wanted to try something else. I used Fedora exclusively from Fedora 8 through 11. I first installed Fedora 6, but I didn't have the time to administrate it and switched back to Windows for a while. Then I had problems with the Fedora 11 upgrade and again with the 12 upgrade. At that point I decided I might as well try something else. I think I like Ubuntu a little better. It seems a little more desktop ready. But, I think Fedora is a solid distro too.

Hi all,

Had been using Ubuntu since about 7.04 on an old HP laptop for a year or so, it developed a few issues due to it's age so decided to buy a new laptop last year. As my new laptop came with Vista, thought I'd stick with it for a while, see what it was like. After months of malware/virus infections, despite having anti-virus software and anti-malware installed, decided to give up and switch to Ubuntu 9.10. It's a revelation after the hassle of Vista, as it simply works, glad to be back on Linux and Ubuntu.

Yeah, I started with Fedora 4. I'm digging Ubuntu so far, especially since I found yesterday you CAN become root in the terminal. To be honest, nothing but love here for both Ubuntu and Fedora. Right tool for the right job--just ordered a number cruncher for work (dual i7s) and we'll be putting Fedora 12 on there I think.

I always swear at the TV when I see those adds. All the things they seem to gloat about it's like, umm, linux, hell even Macs, have had most of that stuff for ages and Windows is just catching up, nicking the best bits of other OS's and making them worse/more complicated/buggy.

Hello, all.

As indicated by the handle, I've been using Linux on-and-off for about a decade now. My best experience was running Slack on an IBM ThinkPad. Recently I got myself one of those cute little netbooks, and after about two days with Windows I slapped UNR on there.

So far, so good. The sound doesn't work; searching the forums for my model it appears to be a lost cause. Everything else seems to be working good: the install went fine, wifi worked out-of-the-box, etc.

One of the things I remember from the old days, and from using Slack, is the concept of "packages" wasn't really well-developed. I'd try to install a package, something would go wrong, and I'd say "Aaahhh, screw it, gimme the tarball". That might be the biggest adjustment I have to make to Ubuntu: a package system that works :o

Hey there, I'm new here as you can already tell. Just wanted to stop in and say hi.

Decided to get rid of Windows 7 as it was becoming too much of a hassle to maintain every single day, so I had switched over to Linux Mint and just recently switched to Ubuntu 9.10 64bit (Ubuntu runs faster on my laptop than Mint does, so I am keeping it as my one and only OS).

Hope to learn new things, and possibly help others in the future. :)

Hello All,

Been working in MIS far too long mostly with IBM AS/400-iSeries, SUN Solaris and MS platforms doing ERP projects and the like. All pretty boring stuff if I think about it for too long but as the movie career didn't work out and the rock god thing never happened I'm still happy with my lot.

Just loaded up one desktop with Ubuntu Karmic Koala.
Office file systems all happy and working, Open Office opening anything I have thrown at it (including some seriously nasty Excel stuff), just made first contact with my SAP server using SAP GUI and can't break it no matter what I do.
Maybe a little concerned that my beloved iPod is not going to work properly as I really don't fancy any MS being on here but I'll figure that one out later.

Now just have to cope with the bald spot I have developed from all that head scratching. Why have I never done this before? What's the catch? Why on Earth have I spent all that money with Mr Gates and various others when it's only given me a 20 year headache?

So far Ubuntu is ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT. Words fail me, speechless and very happy.

Thanks all and keep up the good work.

The beans change as you participate more on the forum. The more beans you get, the more active user you are.

I mean everybody wants to be something liek freshed brewed ubuntu or Ubuntu Espresso Roast or better Ubuntu Staff Admin. It gives something to aim for x)

Also: You get beans by asking questions and helping in the technical forums. You get no beans from community cafe and the like.

edit: Welcome on Ubuntu. It's a fun world. Have a look to ubuntu one. It's a nice online storage/sync/ sharing (if you can get friends to use it too) program. We get 2gb for free, gracefully offered by canonical.

I have been using various distros for maybe 5 years. Don't really know why I settled for Ubuntu except that somebody said it was easy to run and I wanted easy until I get my knowledge back about DOS. Windows sure will wreck a guy. I am just begining to have some luck with things. One thing surprised me. My windows link to the other computers on this net shut down for some reason. I could no longer log on to the administrators pc. I tried it in Ubuntu and was surprised to find it is working as it should as far as I know. Something told me to try the network printer again and that appears to be close to working. I had to choose a driver which was in the printer and it is installed. This tells me I am talking to the printer. All I need to do now is get other things working right. I am on Linux questions and answers also and have tried to get help on three things. Help goes so far then quits short of a solution. I'll se what happens herein other posts.

I'm 26 - I've actually been on Linux since Caldera Open Linux was considered a good idea - since Caldera I shifted to Redhat and Slackware (ugh Slackware ...I know). Anyways, I've been using Ubuntu for about five months now like ESR before me - I find it's a terrifc distribution with a great (and active) community behind it and it's updates actually don't force / to be unrecognized and make my system "sleep forever".

My name is Tyler. Because I'm young, I was born into a world where computers were already relatively user-friendly. Like many people, I started using computers purely for gaming. I've used Windows all my life, it was where I learned everything, starting with animation, then movie making, then "programming" (I used Multimedia Fusion 2, not really programming) and I finally decided to buckle down and start learning C++. As I became a more advanced user, I got interested in Linux. After trying to get Fedora to work on my computer to no avail, I stumbled upon Ubuntu.

It took a lot of work to completely transition, and to be honest, Windows still occupies most of my hard drive, but here I am. Getting the simplest things to work on Ubuntu made me learn just how god-awfully complex everything is when your not guided by Window's trusty little wizard, but I'm learning so much more. Thanks, Ubuntu. :D

Now its my turn of introduction, lol.
I am absolutely a new ubuntu or linux user. I am a complete windows user never gave a 2nd thought. I have installed Ubuntu only a day back, I am not very happy about it because
I can't install drivers for sound, graphics.....its only for windows.
I can't go online because i can't install my data card, its ev-do datacard, comes with installation cd and I am not able to install, i think its only for windows.
I cant even install i tunes (now this is heights..:( )
Basically i did nothing than installing super hyped Ubuntu and switching back to windows(win 7, btw) and struck doing research in Ubuntu.

little more about me :)
I am from India love to do online studies. I am sure ill be a effectively pro ubuntu user soon;).

Hello all, I am pretty new to Linux, having installed it a few months ago. I love Linux, and these forums are invaluable. I have been a computer geek for years though. I got into them back in '89 running mIRC and the fledgling music creation software that existed at the time. Many ppl in the music industry told me that "you can't do it on a PC, you need a Mac." But I never could swallow the whole proprietary hardware thing, so I stuck with nice generic PC hardware. Over the years I have learned to build and configure my own computers and built some smoking boxes for friends of mine as well. Now that I am older and getting out of the music industry I need a hobby to keep me sitting in front of the computer. I picked programming because I have wanted to learn it for years. So here I am, learning BASH scripting and python. I am having a lot of fun with it while moving at my own pace. So that's me, nice to meet you all!

Hi all...again. As you may have noticed, I actually joined the forum 5 years ago, but haven't posted much. The truth is that every iteration of Ubuntu since then just refused to install on my builds, until now. Mostly I was using Fedora, which I was quite happy with until it started to go buggy with the updates. So, I thought that I would give the new fangled Windows 7 a try and dropped $125 on the OS and another $50 on a security suite. Mistake. I couldn't stand it, as it was slow, non-intuitive, 'kludgy', stuttering in video and an overall pain. I am kicking myself for wasting the money on Win 7 and I proved the old adage, 'Too soon old, too late smart'.

Currently, I am running 64 bit 'Lucid' B1 and couldn't be happier. Everything is back where it belongs and my system is 'snappy' again. I really hope that I can contribute to the Ubuntu community as it feels like the place to be.

All the best,

Al

Hi!

My name is Rik.
I live in holland and am curently studying to become an IT. specialist.
now i can assemble, disassemble and reassemble almost any thing from a server to a laptop, togh some times it takes some tryle and error (/me lookes at the broken parts that now decorate my walls  ). and i can do some prity neat things with windows. but when it comes to linux i am a total lake  (i have come as far as removing the usual card games that seem to klutter every OS i have tryed so far, and installing google chrome in ubuntu 9.10).
now i have prity bad dyslexia as you might have noticed by now and thus i prefere not to read or write to much more than is nescasery as wrhiting this much has alredy taken me about one and a half hours (togh when it comes to thing like HTML, CSS and Java i have no problem what so ever becous it is very logical and straigt farword "something most whritten langiges seem to lack IMHO"). so i was hoping some one wold be able to help me lern a thing ot two about linux throgh VOIP (prefurebly Skype ).
always trying to be a litle more eficciant im gona try to hit two birds with one sotne. becouse i realy want to lern japanese it wold be great if a japanese persone (who speeks a fair bit of english) (togh im not shure thare are any japanese people on this form at all) or some one that speaks realy good japanese wold be able to help me.
oh and while im at it only female, between 16 and 20 years old and.... oh this wasnt a dating site?
ok maibe thats taking it a litle to far, but there is no shame in dreaming, right.
any way, to get to the point: if you dont have any thing better to do and feal like helping out a n00b like me learn how to speak linux and maybe japanese, feel free to respond to this post.

Hello

i am not really new i have been here since 2008 but i never introduced my self.

My name is Mohamed and i go by Spaik (pronounced Spike.. its a long story) and i am from Egypt and 17 going on 18 in a few months.

i knew about Linux since i was a kid, but i never wanted to try it or thought about coz i didn't have my own computer until i was 13 or so i found and iso image of a knoppix and it was live cd so i wanted to give it a try. it wasn't easy to discover the new system and it didn't work with my ADSL modem (speed touch something) and i didn't know much about linux or anything so i just forget about it.

last year 08 /09 i went to the USA as an exchange student (awesome experience) and i got my Toshiba laptop there. i knew about Ubuntu before i travel but it didn't support my desktop computer so i never tried it but i was reading everything about it. and in the USA as u all know its hard to use cracked programs and stuff like that so i said i will give Ubuntu another try and see the programs it has to offer and i did download it and installed it on my laptop.. didn't work with my wifi out of the box and i had to do a lot of stuff that i knew nothing about it to make it work and i really thank god that my wifi card didn't work so i got to learn new stuff and learn about the system. i then start talking with another exchange student who was from Russia and Linux is very famous there so he was very interested and we said that we will use Ubuntu with windows and thats what we did and since then I use Ubuntu everyday.

i hope its not boring to read i just wanted to share the story with the community :D so yeah thats is me and my story with Ubuntu :)

Hi, Ubuntu citizens!!!!!
How does one go about becoming an official Geek Society Member? It may seem like an odd question but, I am really into computers, I have spent countless hours trying to fix problems without any official training from an accredited school. I missed sleep working through the microsoft help trouble shooting. Back in the day of windows 95 I did not know about linux. I first started to like linux through reading alot on the mac site which got me really excited the things it could do, also the specs don't forget the specs. I learned this incredible operating system was built upon a unix code/kernul. What really got me interested was that linux was free, I thought it was a misprint. Well, I have saved some computers with linux and some just met their maker and there was nothing I couuld do, even taking it apart and puting on other parts to improve it did not help. Let me know if I fit the bill, ask all the questions needed to approve my "GeeK" authenticity. If not I will have to try harder.

Hello

I am new to Linux and Ubuntu is my first one. I installed it first on my old gateway laptop in December replacing XP and it was like getting a new computer. I was going to buy a new one but changed my mind when I saw how clean and easy it was to use and made my machine move much faster.

My son wanted me to install in on his computer that had Vista (ick!) because he got tired of all the issues and crashes. I put it on and it works great except that I can not get my broadband wireless to work on it and that is how I discovered this wonderful forum. :D I am currently getting assistance from a very helpful person.

I have decided to download the pocket and reference guide and am going through it. :D

Well, I guess I do need to formally introduce myself. I've been around Ubuntu Forums since November 09 . Don't think I'm as young as most of you, but there are a few others my age here. I'm 60, United Methodist clergy, and in the thriving metropolis of Berryville, Ar. (really, it is a pretty nice little town in NW Arkansas, in the hills, and about an hour of so from Branson, Mo.) I use my computer for writing, music (mp3s and emusic . . . going to try making sheet music with notedit.), personal finance on spreadsheets and the net (just love doing learning and checking things out via the web)

I don't feel like much of a hacker, but I just discovered Conky, and I'm trying to unravel Conky's mysteries. It is working, but doing some strange things. I'll probably ask for help later, but its fun.

I tried Ubuntu after buying a netbook with Vista. Glad I did. Vista is still there, but haven't used it in a while. I did play with Knoppix first, but it wouldn't recognize my wifi. Ubuntu did. I want to learn more. I don't have time to really jump in like I'd like to . . . have other things I must do. But everyone who uses a computer needs to learn to get a little technical now and then. That way, you don't end up paying other people for doing very basic things. I was was fairly fluent with DOS back in the day. Windows came and ended all that. Now, with linux, I can get to a command line again, and one that really does things, at that. But I'm pretty basic at the command line, and will be for a while.

It is like a new world, and I'd like to find some others to share it with here.

Hey I am taking a this opportunity to re-introduce myself, now I am not a absolute windows user, rather i have not logged into windows from past 2 days at all.
I didn't have to install any drivers for sound and graphics, as its inbuilt and compatible to my hardware.
I didn't even have to install my data card for Internet browsing, Ubuntu just picked it up after basic set up.
Did I even ask how to install i tunes (now this is heights..:( )
Basically I am falling in love after installing super deserved Ubuntu and probably never switch back to windows.

little more about me is still the same.:):):)

Hello everyone.
I am dabbling in Linux for more than 10 years, and my first dabbling was with Redhat 5 series and all those 1999-2000 distros.
Later I shifted to Mandrake, but from the past few years, I was on windows on my home laptop, with a Red Hat machine at work.
Last week, fed up with various issues, like perfomance, need to degfrag, anti virus etc., I decided to give Kubuntu a try.
My require,ents were
1. Canon DPP must work - Its working 95%, for the rest 5% I will be troubling the folks at winehQ
2. Wirless - With wicd its great!
3. HD video play - Having some issues with ondemand CPU freq scaling, but was able to fix it somewhat with help from the forums
4. Need to try geotag etc., and I am sure they will also work great.

After a couple of months of trial, I can probably keep windows just for emergency purposes, and move to kubuntu Lock stock and barrel!
So here I am.
But being seasoned in linux does not mean I am not a beginner. In those days it was hand edit xorg.conf, and do a /etc/init.d/net.eth0 restart ever time the line went down etc., etc., but now its all GUI, and I am like in a wonderland. I guess the beginners section is where I can relearn, and also learn command line stuff(GUI is not my cup of tea much).

Other than that I am loving it all, my Dell E1505/6400 with the Intel 945 Graphics is working real great, with wireless and peripherals working. Just need to check my nokia phone connectivity and stuff.

Guess its time to say hello again, and go searching in the millions of posts!

Ok guys, my first post to these forums and just a bit of an introduction really.

Most of my friends call me Eddie which is a nickname that's stuck since school.

Have been around Unix for quite some time, with my full time job being a Solaris engineer. As you'd imagine these machines being in the corporate environment are set up for business applications, so not used for any fancy desktop work.

Have been around FreeBSD (prefering it to GNU/linux) since version 4.03 and again these machines have generally been used for webservers / proxy / firewall etc.

Very new to ubuntu, having only just installed hardy 8.04. in an effort to migrate (exclusivley to linux) from windows xp but still have a workable & usable desktop experience.

for someone who makes a living in the it industry, my home pc environment is pretty sad.... a HP Vectra VLi8 pentium 3 600mhz with 512mb of RAM.

Considerations for Ubuntu (not in any order):

1) Community Support - i've heard you're a friendly bunch of knowledgeable people. lets hope i can give something back in return from my experiences.

2) Easy installation - with a reputation of most things working straight out of the box. So why can't i view quicktime movies etc even after following most of the advice here).

3) I need a decent desktop experience, as my children are getting to work with computers in school (homework / research etc) i need something that they too feel comforatable using. having this out of the box is great, i really can't be arsed with setting this up under FreeBSD it's too much work, and i don't like the bloat that comes with default desktop install.

4) Package support with easy upgrade / installation methods.

5) Market share of Desktop arena - so hopefully bugs will be well documented and systems tested.

Considerations For GNU / Linux (not in any order) (also appreciate these can be met by FreeBSD):

1) Lightweight flexible operating system, that can grow and expand as required.

2) free & can be installed (legally) on other machines

3) will run on a bit of wet string, revitalising my old hardware - i haven't got time now to go and make a cup of coffee between processes.

4) don't have to worry so much about viruses.

So thats me.....

PS. One thing i have noticed though - a few years ago when i was using redhat (6), there was a big emphasis on updating kernels from source (kernel.org) to get new functionality or support for appliations etc... there seems to be a shift away from that now. what's that all about? how do kernels get updated these days?

All the best...

Me.

Welcome to Ubuntu & the Ubuntu forums, you'll find that people are willing to help sort out any problem with your system & we are a great bunch of people. I doubt that there's a more friendlier O/S forum.

Quicktime is a restricted format, but that is easily solved by installing the relevant codecs, visit Restricted Formats (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats) and follow the instructions.

Ubuntu uses the Gnome environment, Kubuntu uses KDE, which I've read that people having used Windows find it better & there is also Lubuntu (which is relatively new).

Kubuntu (http://www.kubuntu.org/) Lubuntu (http://lubuntu.net/) Edubuntu (http://edubuntu.org/)

To install software the user can either go to the Synaptic Package Manager found under System > Administration, or they can use the Ubuntu Software Center, other packages come in the form of .Deb files (one click installation), then there are Tar.gz & Tar.bz2 that are slightly trickier to install.

Kernels come in the form of updates via the Update Manager which can be found under System > Administration, there is no need to upgrade the kernel from source (unless you really want to that is).

Viruses in Ubuntu are nothing to worry about as such, although there are Anti Virus programs that you can install.

I hope this helps you somewhat in making your choices & once again welcome to the forums.

Hi!):P

I've just decided to register today, but I've visited the forum many times before in my google searches to fix Ubuntu problems.

I've got Ubuntu running in dual-boot for more than a year, but never paid much attention to it (except for some small programming).
Until last month I had Ubuntu 8.04, then I installed the 9.10 version and most of my previous problems got solved. I have now wireless internet and sound \\:D/ (still got some problems with the camera though...)

Unlike 99.9999% of the forum members, I'm not a computer expert, so I hope I can learn something.

Hi there! I'm fairly new to the forums but not to Linux; I've played with most of the major distributions at one time or another over the past ten years or so.

My primary interest is in Linux for multimedia production. I'm running Ubuntu Studio 9.10 and intend to use it for the GIMP; working with camera RAW files; video editing; audio production (including MIDI, digital recording, sequencing and production); and perhaps a bit of animation if I ever manage to figure out the 2-D and 3-D software.

(Anyone know if a Wacom or other graphics tablet has ever been used to "sculpt" 3-D models, by the way?)

Hi to all,
My name's Nev.
I'm very new to UFs, but have been using Ubuntu since Gutsy in late '07. Have since tried and enjoyed using Hardy and now Jaunty (unfortunately I don't seem to get on with Karmic, but am looking forward to testing out Lucid soon).

My first ever use of Linux was back in '01 or early '02 running Red Hat 7 dual booted with Win98se. Found it very hard to use (even if more stable than win98se), but am totally loving using Ubuntu nowadays :D. My current main setup is a tri-boot (grub2 rocks!!) with Vista x64 (rarely booted) + Jaunty x64 + Spare Ubuntu partition (Jaunty i386 removed today in preparation for Lucid) on a 250GB HDD with another 250 and 2x500 GB HDDs for storage. My 2nd tower and my laptop are both Ubuntu only machines - Jaunty and Karmic respectively.

Since I've been using Ubuntu over the last ~2 1/2 years I've found (initially through Google searches) the Ubuntu Forums an amazing source of excellent info. Thanks to all involved, particularly Andrew46 and his tutorials on compiling mplayer with vdpau and full codec support (my absolute favourite player now, even without a GUI).

Most of my spare time is spent exploring/manipulating my Ubuntu installations, but when I'm not on the computer I enjoy riding my Suzuki DR650 or heading "out bush" to my blocks of land in a small country town.

Best wishes to all,
Nev

Hello All!
Really new to Linux/Ubuntu. Tried checking it out in '08 but wound up on a "geeks" page. I don't do any programming, etc, so it appeared that to use Linux you needed to enter everything like we used to do before Win 3.1. Didn't want that!

62 YOA and trying to "rebel" against the cost of doing Windows, and everything else you have to pay for that's built for Win.

Looking for an easy to use, user friendly, OS that doesn't cost way too much for what it does and has lots of support that doesn't cost $49/request.

Have lots of questions but am finding some just by playing around in google. Several good guides on Linux/Ubuntu at http://makeuseof.comCheck it out and see what you think.

Haven't found answers to questions like: What programs that I have been using with WinVista (came on new laptop)will work with Ubuntu? (Like Serif WebPlus 10 used for building my home site.)

Enough for now. You'll find me in the beginners forum with more questions.

My name is Olof and im from Sweden. If you already haven't figured English isn't my primary language so it may suck big time, so be prepared ;)

I have tried different Linux distros back and forth over the last 2 years mainly for running web and file servers in VirtualBox but never really spent much time on learning more than needed to get it secure and running. Decided a month ago to install Ubuntu on my crappy laptop since I got tired on XP and wanted try something new & fresh. After some headache and time spent on Google i eventually got the graphics to work and now everything seems to be running smoothly.

See you guys around!

I am new to ubuntu, about 4-5 months, for XP does not suit my needs as a server anymore, and Vista on my notebook just gave me headaches. But now they are history :)

However, sometimes I use XP via Virtualbox for software compatibility reasons. I am just not too good with WINE.

Hi There

My name is Jeff, I am in Louisiana and I am a Geek. I have been involved with computers for years but have very limited experience with Linux. Back in the 90's I was part owner in a small ISP (something like 1600 users) and we ran RedHat but I didn't have much to do with it. Anyway,I am making the switch slowly at the moment I am dual-booting my machine but will have a dedicated box soon (as soon as I get around to assembling it).

I guess the main reason I got interested in Linux was to learn both sides of the security fence and chose Ubuntu for it's ease of use.

Anyway, this is supposed to be a short intro LoL

Thanks in advance for the support and definitely for the sense of Community.

Hi everyone. I have been using "computers" since I was like 8. I have been building computers from parts since my first P100 rig, mainly upgrading continuously for gaming purposes. I have used quite a few distros over the last ten years and this includes a few years not using linux at all. Now I am at an age (35) where gaming doesn't appeal so much and I have a ps3 also to I can finally throw windows away unless I take work home, being a .net software engineer.

I came back a few months ago to kubuntu being a KDE fan but wasn't to impressed with the fiddly nature of this "new" KDE 4.4 so I added Gnome something totally new to me. I have to say I was so impressed with the latest gnome I have now reinstalled pure Ubuntu and will stick with it for some time I imagine.

So thats the past. I am a geek chic, I guess you already guessed that. I read tech news in my spare time now with a new freedom of not having to buy the best bits I read about. I love forums and think I may learn a lot here. I don't think I have any pressing need for help but would like to pick up tips and nuggets of information which may improve my geek life.

Hi folks,

I'm new to Ubuntu and so far I'm liking it a lot. I've been perusing this forum for a few months now and it is a Gold mine of information! I'd say I'm better than average with computers but Linux/Ubuntu for me is like reading a foreign language, pure gobbly-gook, but it hasn't been too difficult to learn the basics of this thanks to this forum.

One thing that's made learning this system much easier is discovering how to put everything on the lower taskbar and therefore eliminate the top taskbar -

- Making the layout of my desktop identical to Windows.

I know this might sound like 'heresy' in the linux world but doing this has REALLY helped navigate and learn this system. Made everything much easier! And the more I learn the more I like this system.

I am in complete agreement with he philosophy of this open source and free operating system, that was the first thing that attracted me to it and I first tried it as a virtual installation within windows - Wubi - and then went back to windows. But a few days ago I reformatted my HD and installed Ubuntu 9.10 as the only O.S. on my system after dealing with a very stubborn and deep rooted malware or worm problem (Even reformatting and reinstalling windows didnt help!) At first I thought this would be temporary but now I'm seriously thinking for keeping this as my primary and only Operating System. The more I have it the more I like it.

The only thing I truly miss from wondows right now is Media Player Classic (MPC) which is, in my opinion, simply the most versatile and best media player there is! It's an open source application but for windows only... Itried using it with WINE but I get video and no sound... truly wish they would make a linux version of it.

So, I want to thank everyone on here who takes the time to explain even simple tasks to people like me.

Hello,

Born again Ubuntu user... forced to used windows for work and finally am coming back to U.

Look forward to learning all over again, but definitely like the UI upgrades.

Loren

and to PlainsWolf, give VLC player (Video Lan) a try. IMHO it is the most versatile media player out there (and there is a build for windows too)

Another new Ubuntu fan. I Have been a windows user all my life, and just discovered Ubuntu. I feel as though, up till now, I've been lied to. If Microsoft is a heroin dealer on the corner, Canonical is a Physician at the Hospital. They both have lots of drugs to make you feel better, but only one has your interests in mind. Here's to an open-source world!

Hey All,

My name is James and I have been using Ubuntu 9.10 for about 4 days. So far I love it. I have a few bugs I am working out but they are minor things. I switched because I tried doing a restore on my HP laptop and the recovery partition was corrupt and it wiped out both partitions. I called HP about and they wanted me to buy recovery disks. I said Nay Nay and downloaded Ubuntu. I am slowly becoming a convert. I would really like to learn programming more so any help anybody can give me would be great.

I am a writer, Christian books mainly. speaker, Minister, computer consultant and now ubuntu convert. I am going to tell all the people I help with computers forget windows switch to ubuntu.:D

See you all around.

God Bless!

Hi all... My name is Dave. I've been using Ubuntu for about 4 1/2 months now. I set up an account a few months ago but haven't made any posts until tonight.

Anyway, I live in Columbia, South Carolina, USA and I'm 34 years old.

I've always been somewhat of an amateur computer geek so here's the LONG story behind that  (skim ahead if you want!)
=====================
In 1982 (when I was 6) we got a TI-994A and I remember copying BASIC programs line-by-line out of the books, saving them to cassette (making sure to keep a note of where on the tape recorder's counter-clock I saved the program so I could reload it).

In 1985, for his job, my dad bought an expensive AT&T PC 6300. They were actually made by Olivetti & sold in Europe as the M24. It was superior to most PC-clones at the time - it had 640K of RAM (the max allowed by DOS!), a roomy 10MB HD, ran at 8 MHz, stored the date & time, had its own special hi-res CGA mode and was even AT&T Unix/Xenex-capable. At first, I was allowed to use it to play games after school. Of course, PCs had terrible games compared to Apple & Commodores. My dad barely used it so I was on it most of the time. I ended up playing around with GWBasic and making BATch files a lot. I could do just about anything at the DOS prompt when I was a kid!

My first experience working with hardware was in 1989 when my dad bought a DIY PC-clone kit (with a cheesy instructional video) and we both assembled it. That has been an invaluable experience to this day!

We put in a modem, but since Compuserve was $10/HOUR! then at 2400 baud, I found out about BBSing pretty quick. Then, I opened my very own WWIV BBS in Oct 1989. WWIV was free BBS software, but only registered SysOps could access WWIVNet & download the WWIV code. My Christmas money in 1990 paid: the $50 to register so I could join WWIVNet (1500 BBSes - it was HUGE then!), the $20+ long-distance call to download the 360K source code and the $$$ for a copy of Borland Turbo C to mod the source code.

In 1991, I bought Windows 3.0 so I could multitask while my BBS was running, but it was TERRIBLE at multitasking. As soon as OS/2 2.0 came out the next year, I upgraded to 8MB RAM and got a copy of it. OS/2 was a fantastic OS!

I was in college in 1995 when I switched back to MS & Windows 95. I got my first dial-up internet account. OS/2's days seemed numbered so I figured I'd make the switch. Win95 multitasked the BBS & other DOS programs well. Of course, the internet eventually killed BBSing, so I shut down my BBS in Jan 1997 - I had ~40 calls/day in 1991 to and only ~5 calls/day in 1996.
=====================
Is anybody still awake there?

To sum up the next 13 years - Win95 --> Win98 --> WinME --> WinXP. And I sorta lost interest in the "geek" side. I mostly just wanted "my stuff to work". Tweaking and tuning things didn't interest me much. The latest-and-greatest hardware didn't interest me at all.

Sure, amongst my friends, I've always been the computer-go-to-guy - installing HDs & RAM, "cleaning" their computers.

As far as work goes, I'm an accountant at a small accounting firm. I'm the "IT guy" I suppose (there are only 4 of us!) - I set up the server & the network, I install all the software, I make the backups & take them home, do regular "cleanings" and upgrades. But, it's pretty amateur stuff!

So, I guess getting into Linux is giving me a chance to get back into my "inner geek"... LOL. Using the command line isn't TOO hard, considering that I still remember my DOS days, but there's still a learning curve!

At work, unfortunately, most of our software is exclusive to Windows - so no switching anytime soon there! But, I've got my work PC set to dual-boot XP & Ubuntu, and I've tried out Openoffice Calc doing spreadsheets - it is fine mostly, but I still find it lacking, unfortunately. It'll improve in time though!

So that's my story in a nut(tree farm)shell. Hope to start posting more soon!

Hi,

My name is Gerhard Meyer, I am from South Africa. Discovered Ubuntu in 2005 with 5.01 release, enjoyed it very much, but never used it because it didn't pick up all my add on cards I have in my pc, but received my new 9.1 edition (desktop and server) yesterday and decided to google for a forum that can help me with the setup so that I can use ubuntu instead of windows.

Hi. I'm Adam

About a year ago I became frustrated with my M$ Windows XP. I Had herd the word Linux tossed around a bit and all I new about it was that it was free and that it was a command line only OS. I'm the adventurous type and decided to give it a whirl.

I Googled the most popular distros. The first I tried was Ubuntu then Kubuntu, Fedora, OpenSuse,Slackware,Sidux, and even PCbsd.

I always returned to good old Ubuntu, largely because of the wonderful community I found right here. I was sooo lost at first and everything I needed to know was posted here. I expected snobby/techy and got friendly/helpful.

Now all my machines run Ubuntu and I have acquired a group of at least 10 new Linux persons that call me for Linux help. :) I suggest to them this forum but I like to talk Linux anyway.

Many thanks to the team and the community here. I will try to give back in any way I can!

Hi -
I have been using Ubuntu for the past three years since my partner rescued me from a horrid experience with Norton on Windows - Having been a Mac/Unix user in previous lives, I swore I wouldn't touch anything but a Mac except for work (who are still using Windows). He converted an old laptop to Ubuntu for me and I haven't looked back.

Unfortunately, my partner died a few months ago and I have just realized that I don't know enough about Ubuntu to take care of the computer systems I have. He installed the last LTS and decided to keep me there (and it does everything well!) until the next LTS - so I think this is called Hardy Heron 8.04.4 - (but I have to do more reading to be sure I can find the release number!)

He was a contributor to Ubuntu forums here as well as working on a number of other Linux flavours - unfortunately, I don't know all his user names so I can let his friends know what happened.

I am going to be looking into how these two systems are configured (an ancient Dell C400 which loves Ubuntu and a simple desktop system) and trying to figure out how I would select the same customization that he has done for me - if possible. He chose his favorite programs from the releases for me, eliminating ones I did not need, plus added encryption which I am having some trouble figuring out how to select should I want to convert another computer (we have a thinkpad that is ripe for conversion) to Ubuntu.

Just a note to all of you - My partner died without leaving any indication of his passwords. Consequently, all of his computers and back-ups are encrypted and inaccessible to me. So I can't let his on-line friends know where he is and I know from personal experience that friends wonder where you've gone when you disappear from a forum.

So - for all you out there carefully encrypting your systems - think about what would happen to your wife, family, friends, should you suddenly die as my partner did - he was away from home on a trip, had both his systems with him - which are still lost (he died overseas); fortunately, he was in the habit of leaving 2 complete back-ups at home...but they might as well be lost because they are encrypted.

Aside from all of your loved ones grieving for you, they would not necessarily be able to get info that they might need to settle your estate or take care of themselves - only complicating the grieving process. The encryption has left me without a lot of our correspondence over the past 7 years, without some of our shared work (we were writing a book on sailing) - and also with a sense of loss because so much of his life was on the computer writing code as a hobby and corresponding with various on-line groups. It was where he kept everything as I am sure many of you do too - We all have our personal lives that we don't necessarily share with our spouses, but you might consider what you want them to be able to access when you leave.

Thanks for reading and I look forward to seeing you around here.

April 5th, 2010, 02:09 PM
Hi everyone, I am "Jigen". ):P
I was (maybe still I am) a medium-advanced Windows NT user (I started using PCs with NT 4.0 ten years ago, then switched to 2000 and XP, skipped Vista and now I am just wondering if 7 is worth a try or not). I started using Intrepid as Wubi inside Windows (which was giving me a lot of problems in my home desktop at the time). A couple of months later had to change the HDD so I installed Win XP and Jaunty as dual-boot. I have been using Linux almost all the time, except when I have to work on complicated .doc/.xls/.ppt files with colleagues using MS Office. I have also tried Karmic but, after a couple of months, reverted to Jaunty due to shutdown/reboot issues. I would like to increase the total percentage of time using Linux from 80% to 99% :p but still need more time, my job (research scientist) does not leave me much time free for using my home desktop (at work I am forced to use Win). I appreciate much the speed Linux grants even on older machines like mine. I have tried also other distros, but currently I feel I like Ubuntu more than any other. I had been thinking about changing anyway, after some problems I had with some so-called "hero members" (I would rather call them "rude members") at my mothertongue Ubuntu Forum, but now that I've discovered English-International Forum, I will stick by this one which is soooo better, even though it is much more difficult for me to interact in english rather than my mothertongue...anyway, I'll try to do the best I can :)

I am a brand-new Linux (Ubuntu) user, even though I've been interested in the idea for a number of years, enough to have bought a set of the Debian disks quite a while ago, just to help support the work.

So far, my experience has not been good at all.

Hi all
I have taken the step to install Ubuntu 9.1 and have pulled my hair out a few times :)
It's been 4 days now and have not given up on it yet.
It took me 3 days to sort out my wireless and have spent the past day and a half trying to install ut99.
I never thought I would stick it out as much as I have done but hey I'm still here :)

This all started with my boy betting me 1 Pence that I could not install ubuntu - he lost
He then done a double or nothing saying I would not be able to get wireless working, after 3 days he lost.
he has now bet me 4 pence that I will not be able to get ut99 working - I'm still at it for almost 2 days.

Hopefully I can last some distance with ubuntu and I hope to get PLENTY of help here hehehe

Tried my luck in the build linux from scratch.... (LFS) as i am a programmer by profession... but looks like my professional skills are not enough to build it... so downloaded and installed ubuntu on my new Dell laptop....

This forum is one of the great things that ubuntu can be proud of...

Hi all,

I am moderately new to Ubuntu and to Linux in general. I have been working in computers and networking for more years now than I care to think about and have amassed 5 MCSEs, and a CCNP.

I am trying out Linux just to put some of the challenge (and therefore satisfaction) back into using a computer.

After a miserable experience trying to run ANY version of Linux about 5 years ago, I decided to give it another try - this time with Ubuntu.

FINALLY! A distribution that is useable right after installation. No hair pulling, no angst, no swearing.

I'd say it's about 85% ready for nearly any computer user. Application management is STILL a PITA, but it's getting better, and it's still very picky about which graphics chip you use, but compared to the horrible experience I had before, it's a dream!

I also run Win7 and XP in some other boxes I have at home (mainly for testing software) but Ubuntu it's my main operating system.:guitar:

H'lo all, newbie here, I've been poking around OS's a bit, tried 6.0 at some point, but found it too complicated at the time. I am often recuperating older, decrepit machines and mish-mashing pieces to try and get a decent machine up and running. The last PII I had blew its power supply and took out my brand new 2.0 USB card!:(

Anyone know any good guitar effects I could run off of Ubuntu 9.1? (PII, 350mhz w/382mb RAM). I like to plug my guitar into the box and wail away.
