I have a Compaq Pro Linea 3/25x that I'm having a bit of trouble with. I would like to install a simple DOS, but so far, everything I have tried requires more RAM than it has (4096KB I believe). Do any of you guys have suggestions? Maybe other uses?

I dont know what a Pro Linea 3/25x is, but 4096kb ram and dos wont even run? And people are reccomending linux distros like puppy and gentoo? Im pretty sure none of the mentioned distros will run with that little ram. Probably about time to upgrade ;)

EDIT: Damn! Im always late. :(

Ha, yeah, it is about.. 17 years old, I think. I got it off a friend a few months ago and wanted to see what I could do with it. NO idea what he was using it for for so long though.

You could always download the kernel (http://www.kernel.org/), strip it down to a point where it runs on the computer, then build from there.

You could always take out the hard drive, put it in another machine and install something like ttylinux on it. Then put it back in the original machine. Cross your fingers, and turn it on. :)

Even tiny core linux wouldn't run on that machine (6 MB Live Image.)

It's sometimes considered bad form on these forums to tell folk to "google it". But seriously, why didn't you google it?

Check this out: I did a Google search (http://www.google.co.uk/#hl=en&safe=off&newwindow=1&q=linux+for+4mb+ram&meta=&aq=f&oq=linux+for+4mb+ram&fp=ee5043e2c838adbf) for "linux for 4mb ram" (without the quotation marks) and the very first result was this site (http://www.linuxjunkies.org/html/4mb-Laptops.html) - a big juicy guide to installing Linux on "elderly laptops... with just 4mb RAM and small (<=200mb) hard drives".

Just view some old operating systems like beOS in wikipedia and see their System requirements. Some have been taken over by community.

Many old things are now forgotton

BeOS, Acorn PC, Xerox PC etc

I noticed, but it says in the kolibriOS wiki "runs with 8mb ram". That is incredibly light, but for a machine that has 4096KB (4MB) ram and wont even run dos, Im pretty sure its not going to cut it.

You found a very outdated link. Slackware requires at least 64mb ram these days.

NetBSD?

Now this is a possibility.

The minimal configuration for a NetBSD/i386 system requires 4M of RAM and about 40M of disk space. For a full installation (including source and X11), at least 8M of RAM and 200M of disk space are recommended.

On 4mb ram? Are you new?

Just take that old clunker to the recycle center and move on. Even if you did manage to install something on it, what were you planning on doing with it? It won't do anything that's even close to modern.

It won't run DOS? I used to run DOS on 1 MB of RAM, and that was towards the end of the DOS era.

FreeDOS is supposed to run on a minimum of 640k. You might even get a GUI to run on 4Mb.

Menuet OS might run, it's related to Kolibiri if memory serves.

Believe me, if I could get my hands on a working machine with 4Mb in it, I'd be using it.

I have my doubts about that one.

I was going to suggest FreeDOS too.
