9.04 upgrade Size mismatch errors

I've been trying to upgrade my 9.04 server installation, but I keep getting these "Size Mismatch" errors:

I've been googling around trying to find out how to resolve this, to no avail. I am working on a clean install of 9.04 server, and I'm trying to get this setup at work - possibly behind a firewall.

I've run the following commands, also to no avail:


apt-get clean
apt-get update
apt-get upgrade
apt-get dist-upgrade

and everything seems fine until I run dist-upgrade - then I get the size mismatch errors.

Is there anyway to fix this?

I forgot to add that to the list of actions. Makes no difference. I've also changed the repository source, removing the "jp." prefix in my /etc/apt/sources.list file.

Also no real effect. What I get is this result:

Then when i run apt-get dist-upgrade, the same "Size mismatch" errors occur in the same places.

UPDATE: when I try to apt-get install each of the files (e.g. linux-image-server 2.6.28.18.23) that failed to fetch, I get this message:

Can you install any other programs?
if you need a program to test install

sudo apt-get install vimit looks like you can not install anything.

I have been doing some reading on the problem, but I have not found anything that is relevant.

Did you install anything before this problem, like doing an update?

I think that is now due to you removing jp. from the sources address. You should not edit the sources list manually.

I seriously doubt that is the problem. It merely sends requests to different repositories - and in this case, does not change the "Size mismatch" error message.

Especially, since I repeated the whole apt-get sequence of commands from "apt-get clean".

I did some research but I seriously couldn't find anything, you might want to report a bug on launchpad. I cant really help you any further.

Update:

I went ahead and manually added each of the files that were failing to download due to "Size mismatch" errors, in order of appearance. That solved the problem of getting these files and updating my installation of 9.04, but did not solve the "Size mismatch" errors, especially when I tried to upgrade to 9.10.

I then realized that when I previously edited my sources_list file to change the repositories, that I had just deleted the "jp." prefix. I went back in and added "us." to every line that had contained the "jp." prefix, and went through the whole "apt-get clean, apt-get update, apt-get upgrade" cycle, which told me that everything was up to date, and nothing more was needed.

When I tried to do the upgrade, however, I got the same errors, on these files:

Looking around for more hints on "Failed to fetch" and "Size mismatch" errors, I found this site (http://www.zyxware.com/articles/2008/07/27/how-to-fix-hash-sum-mismatch-and-size-mismatch-errors-from-apt-get-apt-cacher) which mentioned clearing out each failed instance from the /var/cache/apt-cacher file.

However, I don't have this file in my /var/cache directory... Wondering what to do next...

OK, an update....

Still having the same issue, so I made a copy of my sources.list file, and made a new one, copying the Jaunty sources list from here (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=997890)

I added "us." to the sources.list archives, and then ran "apt-get update" - "apt-get upgrade" - then "apt-get dist-upgrade"

Things were hit, but nothing was added/deleted.

Ran "apt-get install update-manager-core"

was told I have the latest version, and ran "do-release-upgrade"

Was asked if I wanted to continue, answered "yes" and ran the upgrade. Again got the 'Failed to fetch... size mismatch" errors.

Now, I can wget each of these "Failed to fetch" upgrades, so what is going on here?

STILL having issues.

Ran update-manager -d

which gave me the result "update-manager not installed"!!

ran apt-get install update-manager, and about 140 packages started installing, and then... I started getting the "Failed to fetch" messages again.

I ran wget on the first package that failed to fetch, and it downloaded, no problem. I tried apt-get install on the same package, and got: "E: Couldn't find package docbook-xml_4.5-6_all.deb"

What is going ON?

OK, so tired of getting nowhere with the upgrade to 9.10, I downloaded a new iso file, burned it on a dvd at 2x speed (NOT maximum), and did a clean install of 9.10 server.

The install went fine, rebooted, logged in, set root password, logged out, and logged back in as root.

All good.

Did the apt-get update, then apt-get upgrade, had some files recommended for upgrading, then answered "Y" to the upgrade.

All went well for the first 31 packages, then got the "Size mismatch..." message again.

Ran apt-get update --fix-missing, then apt-get upgrade --fix-missing, entered "Y" again, AGAIN got the "Size mismatch..." message, but some of the packages loaded.

Is there some sort of issue with the repositories?

One more note:

Although I selected Install LAMP during the initial configuration from the DVD, neither Apache nor MySQL were installed. I just now installed Apache via webmin, while MySQL continues to have packages fail to install due to "Size mismatch" failures...:confused:

I had this problem too. I am behind a proxy. I've setup the proxy via automatic URL.
When i changed to manual configuration, it worked.

Just to let everyone know, I was having similar issues with an upgrade from Karmic to Lynx. I kept getting Size Mismatches on two files: libsexy2-something and perl-sexy....

After doing some digging and figuring out, I found out that it was my Web Content Control (Dansguarding) / filter that was not allowing the files to be downloaded. (Probably because of the "sexy" in the name.) Turning off Web filtering allows the upgrade to take place.
