I am getting really frustrated!

I installed Karmic and the resolution was lower than I expected. I went to Admin and Drivers and the system stated I needed to activate the Nvidia driver. I did this and the system asked for a reboot.
Now after Grub I get a black screen. I can hear things going on in the background and can even guess when to input my password, but all I see is a black screen.

Please can anyone help me get my beloved Linux back?
I have tried loads of things and can't help but think that this should be easy to solve.
BTW I am a complete newbie.

Thanks,

Steve
