As a win user of 22 years, loosing a file extension, is like loosing half your sight in nautilist browsing.

I understand maybe the icon system is helping remedy this. Is there a field I can turn on to have the permissions listed. Maybe at least a key to decifer the icons. Why does the chm's take 2 minutes to load? Oh looks like once the chm loaded nothing on it works, anyway.

open a terminal

cd /path/to/directory

If you right click the file, the permissions tab will display those.
What files are you looking at that don't have extensions? Most files without extensions are either text or executables, otherwise they tend to have them.
