Hi, I am new to Ubuntu and have just purchased a 7 month Acer netbook from ebay, is there any software i can download to check for any malicious programs that could have been installed on my new netbook (keyloggers etc) before i start to use it and connect it up to my home broadband, Any help and advice is very welcome and thanks in advance. :D

Security in Linux is different than in Windows. Here's a good resource to help you understand the differences:

I would install Ubuntu from fresh on it.

Must agree, once a laptop is out of your sight you have no control over what may or may not have been loaded so purchasing a pre-loved kit could be a bit of a pain. Fresh install is the only way to go. IMHO antivirus, antispyware & antimalware applications are not needed when using Ubuntu*.

+ 1 for the fresh install. Better safe than sorry. Here's another link for Security (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Security). If you need any help on installing and configuring, feel free to ask.
