View Full Version : What distro are you running today?

I've been hopping around to a few different Linux distros on my PC over the past couple of weeks.

The first I tried was Centos 5.2, then openSUSE 11, then PCLinuxOS 2007, and now I'm back to Centos 5.2 again. :D The tricky part in all of them has been trying to set up the drivers for my ATI Radeon X700 video card without hosing the system. Even without accelerated video, running Linux on a half-decent x86 PC (Athlon XP 2000+, 1.5 GB RAM) is refreshing after having mainly used the PS3 for running Linux. :ugeek:

I really liked the look of openSUSE, but I think I'll prefer to use Centos 5 more due to the similarity with YDL 6. PCLinuxOS 2007 did a great job of detecting all my hardware, but I didn't dig into the repos enough to find some updates I was looking for (like Firefox 3).

Nothing wrong in reporting the post, if you feel it needs moving.

ubuntu 9.10 server (or desktop) on an old 350mhz dell

i know what your thinking, dont mock the old 350mhz. 12 years, 3 OS's, more ram, extra hardrive and this thing still runs like new

Good luck with that one...

You might want to try something considerably lighter.

Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Server for the server; looking forward to trying out Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Server when it comes out.
Ubuntu 9.04 on the (primary) desktop
Windows 7 on the being-set-up desktop; still to add a second hard drive with Ubuntu (10.04) installed so system becomes dual-boot
Ubuntu 9.10, Fedora 12 KDE, openSUSE 11.2 Gnome and Windows XP on my laptop (3 hard drives and cases to slide in and out like a game cartridge)

Ubuntu Server will work fine on it. One of my servers is a 451Mhz PIII with 128Mb of PC-100 :) Ubuntu Server uses ~30Mb of RAM, running as a file and web server :)

My choices,

Main Desktop - Ubuntu AMD64 9.10 (XP Pro x86)
Second Desktop - Changes all the time. Currently Crunchbang 9.04, but I want to try out Debain LXDE :)
Both Servers - Ubuntu 9.10 Server x86
