Yikes. That's a hell of a find. I was going to read up on the BH DC 2010 seminars this weekend.

The guy had to physically remove the packaging of the chip & probe around its internal circuitry to read the unencrypted data.

Physical access = root access, as usual.

Absolutly!

Part of a security plan should include restricting physical access. If a computer is lost or stolen then assume that any data on it is compromised. For example, do not leave your laptop unattended.

This is defiantly the case if you have company propriety or government data on it.
