Its very true. Alot of the important moments of my life have been preceded by one or many google searches.

Does a company like Google really need to advertise? Their product is already a synonym for web search.

I was surprised at this move also. Especially considering the outrageous costs.

Pretty sure it's in reaction to the Bing commercials (laugh if you want).

How difficult can it be to assemble a crib?

What if you're making one out of twine?

Who saw that advert? Was that for USA audiences only?

That is a freaking good ad, although I see a lot of people having difficulties to follow the speed of it. Perhaps this is what they want, so people keep watching it to catch all the searches and results.

About if they need an ad...let's remember that Coca-cola is one of the most well known brands in the world (if not the most) and they don't stop advertising. Additionally, advertising on TV might not be intended to spread the brand to the public, but to add value to their services. Imagine how many people would decide to pay for Google ads after seeing that commercial, just because they have commercials on TV.

Well, I know nothing about marketing strategies..I'm just guessing.

I compare google and bing like I do Ubuntu and Win7 one is not MS and the other is M$. I know what ones I use, and I bet you can guess what 2 they are?

oh and I like the add, it was very well done, and very googleish.

The real ad has his girlfriend doing a little research herself:

(Types in a name . . . .)

US Bankruptcy Court case #104834
3 unpaid parking tickets
Pleaded no-contest to writing a bad check

(Filling out a craigslist listing to sell a like-new, badly-assembled, crib)

I was not expecting that. When it aired, the IRC chat chatter picked up a bit! :p

I thought it was good, better than any of the tons of Bing commercials I've seen (though some of those weren't too bad).
