I've often wondered what keeps open source software from becoming unsupported overnight?

What a weird and vague thing to wonder about....... :-k

If its a small dev team, then it could be any number of reasons, money is a pretty big and obvious one, personal reasons are another, etc..... the reasons are pretty much endless.....

Is there a point to this?

The answer to this is about as vague, neverending, and pointless as wondering, "I've often wondered why people quit their jobs?"

Cause it open source and if anybody cares they will fork it...

Also some projects are less worthy than others so competition drives the projecs too.

Like one of the open flash project just recently, well they didn't "stop" but they kind of gave gnash the "go" to be #1

Nothing.
If it was a popular project chances are that someone will take it over, like the Mozilla browser.
On the other hand if a proprietary software becomes unsupported you are ****ed.
