My X is running, but the GUI isn't loading up. My firefox loads up, the wireless app loads up. I can use my mouse, keyboard, but I can't see or use any of the OS GUI.
Xubuntu Karmic 32 bit

This is actually quite an old installation. It was working for a while not, but it's messed up now. I am not sure what changed, because it's my girlfriend's laptop. But I can tell you, she didn't install anything. She doesn't really know much, if at all anything about installing or tweaking settings.

i'm not that familiar with with Xubuntu but you can check the integrity of the hard disk by booting off the Ubuntu liveCD and going to System->Administration->Disk Utility
If the disk is okay, do you have a recent backup you can restore from?
