Hey everyone. I was recently at Wikipedia and I noticed that the pronunciation they have for Texas in this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._state#List_of_states) article is much different from that which we use here in East Texas. So here's my question, how do you pronounce "Texas"?

Most people where I'm from call it: /ˈtɛkzɨz/, /ˈtɛksɨz/, or /ˈtɛksɨs/. Normally, it's the first one, though.

Tejas is the word that Texas is derived from. It is pronounced tay-hoss This is a bit off, but it is closest to the traditional Texan pronounciation. /ˈtɛksəs/ - Tehck-ssuhss, or /ˈtɛkzəs/ - Tehck-zuhss 3 30.00% However, this is more common from those not necessarily with an accent. This is how I pronounce it. /ˈtɛkzɨz/ - Teck-ziz, /ˈtɛksɨs/ - tehck-ssiss, or /ˈtɛksɨz/ - Tehck-ssiz

I say /tɛksɪs/ myself. In many dialects, my own included, /ə/ does become /ɪ/ under certain circumstances, but I'm not sure quite what the trigger is.

Speaking of state names, a pronunciation that I've always noticed since I came to Texas is /kɒlərado/ for what us /kɒlərædinz/ call /kɒlərædo/.

It doesn't matter what you call it, just as long as you don't mess with it.

I, too, call it Texas.

1/2 Texan on my mom's side ;-) (Since it's a whole other country)

Some quick searches indicate that it's more likely a Caddo word that was borrowed into Spanish.

Actually, I lived in Texas for a while and would gladly relocate if I was still single.
