I don't quite see how that thread is official. I mean, he doesn't even have the disk space requirements for 9.10 which is already out.

This is not official
Ubuntu should never use mandrake because there was a distro (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mandrake_Linux) with that name already

Mandrake? I remember mandrake before it became mandriva :P

My first thought here ,,,, was Mandriva .... which used to be called ..... ?
confusion for the old ..... and its confusing enough ...... ;)

I also think it sounds too in your - face "Mighty" .... especially if things do not go to plan ......

How the Mighty fall and so on and so forth ...... never be negative ......

Although if it is going to be the best thing out and confidence is high ........

Majestic Maison .......... Marvelous Mission .........

or to be humble Merely Musky .....

I'll buy Mandrill, since it's a critter, but not Mandrake which is a plant. If history is any indication, all Ubuntu versions will most likely continue with animal names.

Indeed. They sure aren't going to use Mandrake. That's a guarantee. It's another distro, after all.

I could not possibly care any less what animal name they paste on any release. The only animal name I remember is dapper drake and that is because it was my introduction to ubuntu. I use kubuntu 9.10. I will use kubuntu 10.10. I used to use kubuntu 9.04. That's all I have to say about that. Oh yeah, I do remember a release called "hardly here" or something like that.

Actually Mandrake, as in Mandrake the mighty, amazing, awe inspiring magic man, would be kind of cool since as we all know there is magic in the underlying core of ubuntu which allows it to be distributed for free (as in beer). However, that would not be really be in line with the animal theme even though man is an animal. Now run along and play.;)

You beat me to it. A mandrake is not an animal, so it will not be named that.

Ubuntu Guide doesn't seem to be officially affiliated with Canonical.

If Canonical indeed did choose "Mighty Mandrill" for the development name of Ubuntu 10.10, there would be an article about it on the official Ubuntu website, and it would be referenced on the Development Codenames (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DevelopmentCodeNames) page of the official Ubuntu wiki.

Given the fact that Mark Shuttleworth is from South Africa, and also given the fact that Africa has always been somewhat of a theme for Ubuntu, it's most likely going to be Mighty Mandrill. Which in my opinion, is an excellent name.

Reasons for Mighty Mandrill:

The Mandrill's coloring is similar to the coloring used for Ubuntu's logo.
Mandrills are found only in Africa. (Shuttleworth is from Africa)
Mandrills are social creatures. (Ubuntu is a community project)
Mandrills are extremely intelligent creatures, and very adaptable, like all primates. (Ubuntu is a very flexible Linux distribution)
Mandrills are not human, but are very closely related to humans. Also, since the word "Ubuntu" means: getting closer to humanity, this would make alot sense as a mascot.
Mandrills can also be formidable foes in fights with other animals. (Ubuntu is a prime competitor to Windows)
Ubuntu has mono as a major dependency. (Mono means "Monkey" in Spanish)

According to this tutorial.

Look at Disk Space requirements,

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=352460

It says Mighty Mandrill, not Mandrake.

To me, names mean nothing. It could be called Slithering Slartibartfast and I still wouldn't care, just as long as the software is great (which it is) then it's all I need to consider.

Correct. It's not affiliated at all. The announcement would be posted to one of the Ubuntu mailing lists from Mark Shuttlworth detailing the goals for 10.10. I have yet to see a link to that.

I think the bottom line is that the OP cited this link: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=352460 as the "official" source for Mighty Mandrake.

The OP said "Look at Disk Space requirements". Well, Mighty Mandrake is not even mentioned there, or anywhere on that post. Though Mighty Mandrill is.

I believe the OP is seeing things...figments of an overactive imagination

I want it to be called Moronic Moose.

I don't think they could go with Mandrake though. It made me think of a certain other distro as soon as I saw the thread title...
