I know this is Ubuntu forums, but Mandriva forums isn't very busy at the moment, and I'm not getting any help. So please help me out guys. (:

I have the Mandriva Free 2010 DVD. When I try to install, the installer shuts off during the installation. I am DESPERATE to install and try the KDE version of Mandriva 2010. Maybe a textual based minimal install or something would work? I tried that though, and it said it would take 10 hours! And I usually download at around 450 kb/s so I don't know why it would take that long. I don't know what to do anymore. The LiveCD won't even boot all the way on my computer, because it shuts it down. Which is why I have tried the Free DVD. Is there any way I can install this? There is nothing wrong with my burner, as I have burned it from 3 different computers.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks guys. (:

Tried Mandriva one? The CD version?

Update: Oh Right yes you have.

Have you tried it on all 3 computers just to make sure you haven't downloaded a bad ISO? Which part of the installation does it shut your system down?

I've downloaded it a few different times and checked the MD5 sums, so it can't be a bad ISO. I'm not gonna try and install it on my other 2 computers, as they are running so well, and I don't wanna mess with them. This laptop I am using is my main computer though. My other two are the family desktop, and my brother's laptop. I can't mess with them.
Maybe it's just my computer? I have tried to install Mandriva on this computer in the past with 2009.1 and it would work either. It doesn't shut down at any specific part in the installation. It just randomly shuts off my computer. I've even tried booting from USB, it shuts off there too.

Mainly, what I'm looking for is a great KDE based distro. I thought Mandriva would be best. Unless I should just do a minimal debian install and install KDE from there?

Have you tried the CD Dual-Arch, I'm not sure if it will fix that because it is the same installation program after all, but it's worth trying first anyway. Also I wouldn't know, I don't like Debian based distros.

OpenSUSE is pretty good, and my favourite distro of all time is Slackware which has 4.3.4 in the -current tree, however you'll need to do a bit of reading about setting it up if you've never used it before.

Tried CD Dual-Arch. I'm looking to try an RPM distro. Would Fedora 12 KDE be good? OpenSUSE didn't work too well with my hardware for some reason. I'd never had as many problems with any distro as I did with SUSE.

Fedora is quite good, however it uses a lot of cutting edge software for the most part so your mileage may vary.

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=8727237#post8727237 Check that out however, so you know how the package manager may run on the first time you use it.

I love bleeding/cutting edge.

So, I'll go for Fedora KDE version and give it a go.
Thanks for your help. (:

If you download the net install you will automatically get the latest versions of the packages during installation so you won't have to update after. Also follow this to have Codecs at install time:

http://rpmfusion.org/EnablingRpmFusionDuringFedoraInstall

Make sure you choose customise packages now during the install or you will be given Gnome by default if you choose the net install.
