Help with installation.. PLZ

I got a computer from a friend and i know it works. I have everything connected right but i have the 9.1 ubuntu on a disc and I try to start up the computer and boot from the disc but i get a error say
iso linux
cannot read from disc. try updating bios.

How do I update the bois if their is now current operating system to start from?
I need full details....

Have you searched on the manufacturer's web page?

If you can't even boot it, it doesn't sound like it works.
Try without the cd, just to see what will happen. If there is no OS on the hdd, but if it can boot fine, you should get a message like No operating system...etc

Some possibilities are :

1. The cd-rom drive may have become defective with age requiring a replacement or dust may have accumilated on the lens.

2. The CD you are using to boot from may have errors that occured while burning.

3. The pc is to old to boot from a cd which is very unlikely :/
