I'm guessing Mozilla didn't like the accessibility of GNOME 3's gnome-shell and other things, so they're trying to send a message that won't get through properly.

It seems it's not the first time they give money to Gnome for the same project, even before Gnome Shell, but I admit that I have switched to KDE because of it.
