I want to switch to a regular desktop, be it gnome, kde or otherwise from UNR. Installing Ubuntu-desktop does not do it. Installing Kubuntu-desktop does not do it. Removing netbook-launcher merely breaks the current system. Now no matter what I switch to, I have no menu, and no icons on the desktop. What do I have to do to make it normal?

You need to go to System -> Preferences -> Startup applications

Remove or un-select the UNR from starting up and you will default back to what ever desktop you had before installing UNR. That is if you haven't corrupted the desktop with all the attempts to remove UNR....

Thanks dBuster, I removed the entry from startup listed as netbook something or other and a window manager, and while that didn't much help things for fixing the Gnome system, it made the KDE system usable now, menu and all.
