Some see it as an OS. I see it as a common environment.

GNU screen is pretty close in functionality to this (only supports vertical tiling though, as far as I know.)

Actually it only supports horizontal tiling but there's a patch for vertical tiling.

Heh, I was confused by that too. I decided "vertical" was the better word for stacking one window on top of another.

You don't really got the flamewar. Vim zealots call Emacs an OS because it's bloated, not the Emacs zealots.

yeah, I guess I didn't get it. Thats probably because I use vi and not emacs though. :) I even have vi integrated into my shell.
