Open Source Documents?

Hey all

I've had an idea (writing a eBook or large guide on touch typing techniques).
It is currently in the planning stage, and I wish to release it under a creative commons license (By-Sa Unported).

In keeping with the spirit of Open Soure, i'd like to make it as easy as possible for others to edit the book

I also wish to include diagrams.

Is there any document format that would suit the criteria?
I was considering .odt, but would like to know if there were any other options I should consider

Also, where would such a project best be hosted?

Depends on what kind of book, I would suggest LaTeX in any case, but especially if you want lots of mathematical equations.

Agreed - LaTeX:

superior output quality,
free,
platform independent,
export to a huge range of other formats, including .pdf, .odt, .htm, .doc, .ps,
support for many documentation formats.

It also has cons:

steep learning curve,
low popularity,
so if you really want tons of people to rework your document, enhance it and make your name known, LaTeX may not be the best choice - unless you prepare your document in LaTeX and then export it to OO Write, which rather defeats the very purpose of using LaTeX. :)
