Ubuntu Karmic and Lucid users can download it from Web Upd8 PPA (don't forget to also download the x264 package).

Alternatively, add the PPA (although I recommend just downloading the packages manually):

I think the reason for this is to allow users to get some features they've always wanted, while the VLC devs will focus on other apps (such as VLMC).

You may be interested to know that users of Karmic Koala can experience vlc-git 1.1.0, the new extensions as well as vlmc by using this admittedly quite complex guide:

Actually this is probably the beginning of VLC jumping the shark. I'm finding that it's getting slower and more bloated, and the current releases have a nasty habit of skipping and freezing on videos that totem plays just fine (2 separate Karmic installs, tried from repo and 1.1 PPA). It's a shame too, VLC was awesome.
