View Full Version : [ubuntu] Getting Japanese input to work in Karmic Koala 9.10

In a previous installation of Ubuntu (8.something, I think) on a different computer, I was able to switch between western input and Japanese input by typing shift-space. I'm trying to get the same thing set up on my 9.10 installation but not making any progress.

My IBus settings say that getting to the next input method should be Alt-Shift_L, but that does nothing. These settings also show my selected input methods to be Swedish and Japanese.

Using the System -> Administration -> Language Support, I've installed Swedish and Japanese. This also shows ibus to be the selected input method, so I assume the Ibus settings mentioned above should be relevant.

I assume I'm missing something vital, but I can't figure out what. Please help!

I'm no expert of IBus, but I use it for Japanese and Russian.

Try this -
System - Preferences - IBus Preferences.
Check the system tray - there should be an icon for IBus. Maybe a keyboard with a globe (default input), or a golden crown (Japanese Anthy). Left click it.
Select Anthy Japanese.

That's what worked for me, on KDE4 and GNOME.

Please find attached some screenshots of my (working!) IBus config.
