upgrade to ubuntu 9.10

Hi, I am new to Ubuntu
How would I upgrade to Ubuntu 9.10 from Ubuntu 8.04 to a dimension 2400 PC without completely reformatting the hard drive.

I would just wait a few months and do an upgrade to 10.04. Else you'll need to upgrade to 8.10 then 9.04 then 9.10.
