A fee days ago a new driver was released and now one can utilize the GPU power of ATI graphics cards in Ubuntu 9.10

To me it seems OpenCL will surpass Cuda and I wondered if there are any applications for general desktop usage are planned or already under development?
Media decoding/encoding, file encryption/compression should benefit alot from it.
