Good evening helpers!
Need help - have Firefox version 2 and would like to update to 3.5. Have Ubuntu 8.04. Help would be gratefully appreciated - still a newbie with linux!

Thanks in advance!
Emma

Hi,

welcome to the forums.

I've asked one of the people who know about FireFox to pop by.

For future reference this is about the best place to ask about FireFox --> http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=8750080 He looks after it really good & is an all round nice guy.

I have a proposed solution, but I want it checked out, in case it would break your system.

Regards,

Phill.

The only way I know of doing it is to enable the stable ppa and get it that way. I'm worried that it might break something if I suggest that as I don't know about 8.04

I haven't played with Hardy for so long, but I guess the PPA should work. Anyway, you could simply download Firefox from Mozilla site, extract it to /opt or your home directory an run the Firefox executable inside the extracted folder. It should work fine. Although I would recommend downloading 3.6, since it doesn't even require xulrunner to be installed.

See this (http://lovinglinux.megabyet.net/?page_id=220##1---Manual-installation-of-fresh-final-releases-from-Mozilla-3) for additional instructions.

BTW, I have a Hardy CD here. I will boot into it and install Firefox with different methods to see what happens.

If you don't want FF 3.6 ubuntuzilla gives you the option of installing whatever version you want. it also makes a backup of your original FF so you can revert back to it with a single command.

you seem to be talking about the ubuntuzilla installer script... ubuntuzilla is now a repository hosting the latest mozilla releases, which makes everything a lot simpler (though you can still use the old script if you so desire).

Oh, and you wonder why I say you're a real nice person ??

Here's one for you all... From one our Management team over at VPOLink, he does have a point, if you agree you can always reply - Most of my Tech Stuff points people back here, just I try to highlight the FAQ's ... Anyways....

Good evening helpers, this one is for you --> http://www.vpolink.com/entries/5-My-Day-Your-Day

He'll kill me for posting that 'softer' side of him :D

Phill.
