When I try to install upgrades the system is asking for a password. I do not have a clue what that could or could have been.
Can somebody please advice how to reslove this?

When you loaded the Ubuntu software it asked you for a password, you had to type it in twice at install. One right after the other. What did you type in? That is your password.

sudo passwd root and set the root password to something you know.
