I have a USB drive, an Eee 1000 PC, and a library computer for internet.

After following the various guides on all the different forums, this Eee PC is giving me a black screen and a blinking underscore as its only sign of life.

This laptop has run Ubuntu in the past (8.04), but now, the underscore is the only result of turning the machine on.

The laptop is my only computer, and the only computers that have been available to create boot images from have been a strange collection of new macs to aged dells running Windows 95.

For the recent attempt, I've uploaded the kubuntu 9.10 netbook iso to a usb thumb drive (using these directions for Mac OSX (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/FromUSBStick), and hdiutil
(instead of diutil, which had resulted in 'command not found')
).

As I attempt to boot the pc from the thumb drive, the boot screen comes up, and gives the countdown to boot;
whether (esc) or nil is pressed, the blinking underscore is all that shows.

What to do?

What is the best way to overcome this underscore?
How can my computer be restored to life?
