View Full Version : [SOLVED] Question about installing from source

I've been using Ubuntu for some time, but this has always bugged me, and I haven't found a satisfactory answer yet.

When you install a package from the repository, the necessary software seems to be saved in a convenient location.

However, when you install from the source, you could compile it from any directory.

My question is where should you store the directory before you install it?

I've read /usr/src, but is there a directory where it is common to store your compiled source files?

Thanks.

EDIT: The advice I've read so far on previous threads suggests just installing from the repos. I'm trying to install a program that's not in the repos (vPython, to be specific).

EDIT2: Nevermine, installed from source (python-visual)
