I installed Ubuntu 9.10 on 1GB USB. Worked like a charm but didn't have any free space left.

I also have a 8GB stick. I however would like to still be able to use it for storing some Windows progs as well as for moving data. Is it possible to install Ubuntu on it, give it some 2GB internal storage, and still have the remaining 5GB available in Win ?

you would have to move the ubuntu partition to the end of the usb stick, windows typically only sees 1 partition on thumb drives.
