Just curious... Does anyone know how many *buntu (* means Ubuntu, kubuntu, xubuntu etc all the derivatives of Ubuntu) users are out there? In this post (http://zenbuntu.com/30-reasons-why-ubuntu-is-here-to-stay/) in the second point, it is mentioned that "According to Wikipedia, Ubuntu passed 100 million users in April 2009" but without any reference.

I am wondering how many people are using Ubuntu (and it's derivatives) these days!

Is that users or the number of machines with an Ubuntu based distro installed. I am a single user but I have three machines with an Ubuntu based distro installed (1 x Ubuntu, 1 x Ubuntu Netbook Remix, 1 x Mint).

The Wikipedia page on Ubuntu (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ubuntu_%28operating_system%29) cites a New York Times article (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/01/11/business/11ubuntu.html?_r=2&th&emc=th) from January 2009 noting that "more than 10 million people are estimated to run Ubuntu today". Your source may be off by a factor of ten.

In short, nobody really knows. Because unlike Windows and Macintosh. Linux users aren't numbered, registered, and tracked.

But... those are the statistics of this forum only not the actual or estimated user number... it means this forum has 1,006,903 members... and this must not be the user quantity...
