Any version of Ubuntu will work well on that spec Pc... Personally I use Xubuntu because I think that XFCE feels faster than Gnome, but both are good :)

Are you talking Ubuntu version or derivative ?

Either way, any should run fine on your hardware, even although RAM is a little tight and graphics card a little old.

would the latest version of ubuntu be faster compared to 8.04?

even if i disabled compiz or graphic features can newer ubuntu version optimize my current specs?

I'm with TenPlus1 (http://ubuntuforums.org/member.php?u=21486), I recently changed to Xubuntu because my old heap of a computer is as old as Patrick Moore and it didn't cope to well with Gnome. Now its as Barry White spread on frictionless glass.
