I had that problem until I upgraded awn from their site and added the newer ppa repos, another alternative i understand is pretty decent is gnome do with docky

Gnome Do has a Docky theme that acts as a dock. As well, they are currently splitting Docky off to be a stand-alone dock.

I'm using Do on Jaunty, and it works like a charm. I use it to launch from the keyboard as well as the dock.

You can't, however, change the icons the applications it shows. If that's not a problem, I'd say give it a try.

I tried SimDock on my 9.04 and it worked pretty well and was simple to use.

I've been using Gnome Do and activated the Docky option which is quite nice. You can put the bar at the bottom of the screen or at the top of the screen. Buttons are simply dragged on or off. You can create launchers on your desktop, change the icon and then drag it to the bar.

I do have an issue on my Asus Eee since it will crash while my user profile is being loaded after log on so then I need to kill Gnome Do after doing <Ctrl>+<Shift>+F1. Never faced that problem on my desktop though.
