How can reformat my hdd ext4 so that it is recognisable for windows XP and proceed with a XP system installation`?

use gparted to format the partition to ntfs

does it resize as well? do you mean gparted or gparted live, the one that is burned and later on booted from?

either gparted on the Ubuntu live CD, or the gparted CD. Some people seem to think that the gparted CD works better.

Yes, it can resize as well.

make sure you have backed up anything from the HD that you want to keep.
